It's because we're all very well off in the sense that we have food on the table, a roof over our heads, kids are ok, we're not worried the Germans are coming, etc…
We're good. So in the absence of this eminent danger, we've created our identities in our politics/beliefs. We're
Bored.
I think It's the schools, they radicalized at least a couple of generations, then social media came along to spread the radicalization and it took off like wildfire and divided the country more and more.
Schools haven't done anything. It's really just social media. People can say whatever vile thing they want and don't have to look the other person in the eye. I see it from both sides and it continues this tribalistic thing where the other side is evil.
But also schools
If the schools were the biggest issue, why are those of us over a certain age also frequently divided hysterically on political lines? Social media is the biggest issue because people get on sites with people that for the most part agree with them and they think that means that they are right and anyone else that doesn't agree is an idiot, corrupt, criminal, etc.
If I had to pick a second reason, it is politicians have driven the wedge between us as a country to exploit it for their own purposes. The fact that few house districts in the country are competitive adds to the loss of the middle of America so we end up with more extreme sides being taken by both parties. I miss the days when we could tackle things in this country with bipartisan work and support like Reagan and O'Neill along with Clinton and Gingrich did.
