It's frankly incredible that Canada has become such a failure in the western world sharing a border with us. They should at least be somewhat close to us due to sheer proximity.
Trudeau and Carney have done an amazing job of tapping into the Canadian insecurity complex with the US to their demise. They so badly want to be treated as an equal partner and major player when they just aren't. They have taken so much pride for decades how people like them better than Americans because they seemed friendly and chill but they could only do that because the US took care of keeping them safe and set up a trade policy that basically subsidized them.
All of that is basically over and now Canadians are trying to shift into this tough guy "Elbows up!" idiocy where they suddenly think they are badasses that can push the US around. Americans outside of a few states don't even think about Canada for the most part. It's fascinating to me listening to some Canadian outlets acting like this is THE story and most Americans are "meh". Canada acting like they are big and bad is more likely to induce laughter than serious concern outside of cultural elites and people looking to hate Trump or worry about "how well we are liked in the world".
The reality is Canada has virtually all of their O&G going through US pipelines and we only buy from them because we can get it at a discount. Lumber and potash are nice. Outside of that there really isn't much we need from them. Meanwhile their entire Eastern economy (which is most of the population) relies on us letting them build cars and other industrial equipment and ship it to us, often US manufacturing companies. Without that O&G flow through the US they would be paying $20/gallon in Toronto. All of the real value in Canada come from Alberta and Saskatchewan who keep flirting with secession and are very out of step with Eastern Canada. They also aren't likely to want to have their oil money to the US shut off because Quebec wants French labels on imports.
Most Canadians just watch the CBC or other liberal news outlets that pump them full of nonsense and Trump hate 24/7. They have no clue just how naive they are. In the meantime they are ignoring how they are falling further and further behind economically and are burning the only bridge that can save them. If AB and SK secede the rest of the country will be 3rd world within a decade. Canadians see Europeans cheering them on but ignore that the EU sure as hell isn't going to let Canada start importing industrial goods without tariffs to Europe, it's even more laughable what China will do to them. Economies that are export driven and produce the same basic goods will always be competitors. It's not like Canada can build an economy on shipping maple syrup to the EU.
