"Tax the Rich" - aren't celebrities rich?

If Dems love to tax the rich, why don't they start with the celebrities that love them so much?

If the rich ought to pay their "fair share", then how can it be fair for musicians in their 80s to still be collecting millions in royalties from songs they sang, frequently written by someone else, decades ago? Why shouldn't royalties from any song, movie, book, etc. that was written more than 10 years ago be transferred to the government or, better yet, expire?

If the R's adopted a "tax the rich" platform, but designated specifically for artists and celebrities, it would be fun to watch those artists and celebrities squirm and turn summersaults trying to explain why it shouldn't apply to them.

Members of The Party always want rules that apply to YOU, not to them. It's the same in all communist countries.

They want things to be (D)ifferent. It's also why they're always in favor of "charity" with government money and not their own.

I thought actors had a deferral clause in the tax code.

The general sentiment is for people to want to tax everyone who is wealthier than or isn't themselves in order for government to be empowered to do they things they personally want it to do, instead of working and paying for that thing to be done at some scale by their own personal effort.

It's mostly pretty selfish where there isn't a clear universal and socially necessary good that promotes the minimal stabile function of society.

I wonder whether and how much these tax proposals take into account the potential for capital/wealth flight. My guess is not as much as they should.

The rich who are for taxing the rich are that way because they obtained their wealth through luck rather than hard work. They feel guilty that they are rich while others are not. Meanwhile, the ones who bust their ass are not in the mood to give their wealth away to people who sit on their ass. And that is why the former thinks the latter is "heartless". They think the latter won the luck lottery like they did and refuse to "pay it forward".

In their mind, the "rich" make 200k. Not that that's a bad salary, but with today's inflation that's just comfortable, not rich.

More to the point, Glenn Reynolds ('instapundit') has been a champion of repealing the 'Hollywood tax cuts' for decades now.
Quote:

Instapundit Glen Reynolds made the suggestion that if we are going to raise taxes to cut the deficits, why not start with a 20% excise tax on the film industry? Since many of these Hollywood stars and producers are forever telling us how we need tax increases to help close the deficits, why not let Hollywood lead the way? The tax, which was imposed on the gross income and not the net, took a 20% hit off any Hollywood bottom line and can you imagine how much a major star can contribute with a 20% tax on a gross income on one of those 10 to 20 million dollar salaries for a single movie?

Let face it, much of Hollywood may talk of the down trodden, but the reality is Hollywood is the home of the 1%. So if the Hollywood 1% are going to help elect the most leftist President, then let them lead by sacrificing the first 20% of their gross income!. As Glen Reynolds argued, tax the Hollywood 1%. Or at least let them squirm. Who knows, maybe George Lucas or Steven Spielberg might just produce their own film defending supply side economics if they are faced with the idea that the first 20% of their income will go to the government even before they even cash that big eight or nine figure check

My response to this is that no one is stopping them from paying more than their tax bill. You want to "tax the rich" to pay for social programs, then you should be gladly paying extra every year on your own.

Dems and celebs have always been absolutely tone deaf on this topic.

This past week Kristen Stewart lamented the capitalist attitude of Hollywood. This is a girl worth about 100 million, living in a 7 million dollar home in the Hollywood hills.

Billie Eilish is worth 60 million, and lives in a 14 million dollar home. She recently lectured billionaires for having too much money....while she continues to rake in millions.

We could make a long list of celebs who have millions, who also criticize capitalism and espouse socialistic beliefs.

I think my favorite is AOC showing up to the Met Gala, which celebrates excess, in a $5,500 dress that says 'tax the rich'. All the while she went from bartender to worth a few million (mostly in her hubby's name), on a $174k a year.

I'm not even mad at the grifters. I'm upset at the morons (fans/constituents) who can't see what's right in front of them.

From seeing how rich "our" congressmen have gotten off of kickbacks/bribes under the guise of campaign donations, I think Americans should pay a lot less in taxes. Our country is being run by crooks, buffoons, lunatics and too few good men!

And what about the Biden administration stealing $92 Billion dollars in their final 6 weeks? Payments to companies nobody ever hear of! It's outright theft!

We taxpayers are being taken to the cleaners!

No, they mean the really, really rich. Those rich celebrities with multi-million dollar mansions in Hollywood and vacation homes in exotic places are closer to being broke than being Elon Musk, so they're basically broke just like you and me and are acceptably rich.

Over 50 billionaires/millionaires gave Harris that $1.4 billion dollars she wasted trying to beat Trump.

That is more than what he got in donations.

I think that the R's should take that platform and watch the liberal rich squirm.

I still think about when the rock and Oprah asked for donations in the Hawaii tragedy and how ridiculous their act was. A billionaire and a man worth 800 millions asking us to help. Wow, really?

That's not how this works. They have tax shelters, tax attorneys, CPA's etc working night and day to get them to keep the most money possible. Taxes are for plebes and little people. the plebes also must suffer unarmed on ****ty public transportation while the elites ride in limos with armed security.

They actually probably set it at $400k for a family and even that is not rich. Two working professionals can make that but not be rich by any stretch.
