I am blown away by this story and wonder how many other telecom centers there are? Think of it: 100 servers and 100,000 simcards - the damage they could have done.

Read the article on Fox well over an hour ago. I too am shocked this is not being more widely covered.

Can someone more in the know than me help explain this? Is there anything outside of a terrorist attack or foreign invasion that would explain the need for such a network to be built in the shadows? Seems way too elaborate for organized crime or gangs.

I haven't seen anything yet.

Those concerned about this that make IT decisions for their companies, I highly recommend deploying a private 5G solution with dedicated spectrum and specific devices/SIMS

Pretty eerie considering the major threat announced recently which was aimed at confusing and overwhelming emergency response teams.

I am no expert but I would think this would be used in such a way as to clone or install some type of data collection software on the cell phones of those attending the UN meeting. What would be more powerful than knowing exactly what the heads of the G20 are thinking and being able to capture compromising information, texts, pictures, emails etc of the world leaders?

Iran and Venezuela would be at the top of my list of suspects.

You don't build equipment like this for a one time attack. It was likely also listening in and copying all coms in the area.

"London Has Fallen" comes to mind.

No official word out but the NYT's article included a cybersecurity expert opinion that only a few state actors could orchestrate something that sophisticated, mentioning Russia, China and Israel or potentially one of the Mexican cartels.

Given the context, this could mean a lot of things. It may not be individuals known to law enforcement and located here. There are plenty of cybercriminal and hacking groups overseas that are well known by pseudonyms even if we don't know exactly who or where they are. I got a quick primer on this by a NATO cyber security expert several years ago as part of a lesson on network analysis, and in a lot of cases we know who the bad people are, but we don't always know who they are.

A lot of nations will also contract out in this space, asking for development work or attacks so they can stay at arms length with plausible deniability.

It's likely they have an idea who was behind this, but they're not going to disclose it for a variety of reasons. First and foremost is not risking intelligence gathering sources or techniques. Second, and just as important, they may have more investigating to do or some kind of counter operation.

It could easily have been Israel, Iran, China, Russia, Germany, or UK. All have capabilities.
