But we will still hit a $2 trillion deficit this year. We are $1.97 trillion ytd and the FY ends this month. Some analysts are now predicting we could hit a $2.6 trillion deficit in 2026.

When will the spending cuts and extra revenue from economic growth kick in?

This is not sustainable.

Entitlements need to cut but we all know that won't happen.

There never were spending cuts. You know this. In fact, I'm pretty sure your railed against the BBB because all the spending cuts were backloaded and would never materialize.

only a balanced budget amendment will fix the spending and there is zero chance of that happening

I wouldn't celebrate too quickly. Good chance the Supreme Court upholds lower court rulings that most of his tariffs are illegal. If so, those tariffs will have to be refunded.

This. The debt has doubled roughly every eight years since we abandoned the gold standard in 1971. Wholly irrelevant who was in Congress or the White House during those eight years.

That said, we do need spending cuts. Badly. Live within your means. Get rid of debt at a personal level to begin with.

If the economy is doing so great, why do we need to cut interest rates?

I'm not blaming tariffs or Trump although the chaotic nature of the tariff implementation has added to the issues, our biggest economic issue is inefficient public debt and spending squeezing out the productive private sector. Until we get government spending under control, our economy will not thrive (3%+ sustained real GDP growth)

Trump's tariffs are great. Huge revenue and the American taxpayers haven't paid hardly any of it.

All this *****ing is silly.

But, we are about to hit some serious inflation. And it's due to removing about 30% of the workforce. Well worth it, IMO, but the inflation is about to hit the fan.

The tariffs aren't illegal. It's the way they were issued that is unconstitutional.

We might be saying the same thing, or not. There are some tariffs that Congress authorized (sectional tariffs) that are upheld, but there are others where the court held that the president exceeded his authority (reciprocal tariffs) because they are not explicitly authorized by law.

Essentially, tariffs are a tax which the constitution clearly empowers with Congress, not the president. The president's attempt to create a tax not authorized by Congress is illegal/unconstitutional according to the courts.

But the SC hasn't ruled yet, so we'll just have to see how it plays out.

Correct. I believe he's deemed them an emergency power he has...which is a stretch. Congress could make this all moot and just pass the tariffs but Congress is hell bent on losing their power/authority.

Let's start with the 30% of the workforce being removed. The US workforce is about 170mm. So how do you think we are losing about 51mm? Do you really think there are that many illegals working in the US? That is a number way above anything Trump and the admin has stated.

Looks like we are projected to bring in $250-300B in tariff revenue this year which is about 10% of our annual deficit of $2T. So, pretty much a nothing burger since we are not going to cut any spending. Incrementally helpful and that's it from a debt standpoint.

We also don't know how that revenue is actually being allocated and spent behind the scenes. I would be surprised if it's actually going directly to pay down the debt since no one cares about doing that on either side of the aisle.

We could have an F16 mystery van. Rocky, of course, could provide the canine(s). I leave the rest of the cast to the druthers those of you posting far longer than myself.

The end of every thread, "Things would have been great, if it weren't for you meddling darn boomers..."

As I have said before, it makes me smile when one of the "usuals" rants about our behavior, totally ignoring their generations' doing worse on almost every social measure.

As we proved during COVID, it's the lower paid workers that had the massive increase. Minimum wage went from around $7.50 to what was now is basically $10. The blue collar workers also increased substantially. Paying people to stay at home effectively is the same as removing workers from the workforce.

It's not the entire workforce that will drive inflation.

What does this have to do with the fact that you are claiming inflation is about to heat up due to over 50mm leaving the work force which is flat out unrealistic unless we get a depression in which case inflation won't be an issue?

Total US workforce has never been higher than it is today so if you are saying we have taken people out of the workforce due to covid payments doesn't mesh with reality.
