New Mexico has become the first state in the country to guarantee universal child care to families residing in the state.

New Mexico families will be eligible for free child care for infants and toddlers starting Nov. 1, no matter their incomes. The groundbreaking initiative will require no co-pays from families.

The typical New Mexico family is expected to save over $12,000 per child annually with the initiative.

This is awesome. Hope it serves as a (positive) test case for other states to follow suit!

It's stupid. You're child, your choice, right liberals?

Classic republican. They pretend to value children only until they're born then it's not 'their' problem anymore.

Their children are their problem, the children other people bring into the world (but cannot afford to have) are not.

In the history of our nation, no program has lifted more people out of poverty than Social Security. By almost every metric, SS is arguably the most successful government policy the nation has ever created. A program that by design funds itself through FICA and has no impact on the deficit, budget, or debt.

Hey Google, "How much FICA goes into Social Security each year nationwide?"

"Estimates from the Social Security Administration (SSA) indicate that around $1.17 trillion in FICA taxes was directed to Social Security in 2023"

Hey Google, "How many dollars in social security benefits are paid out annually?

"In fiscal year 2023, the Social Security Administration paid out approximately $1.38 trillion in benefits, while projections for 2025 estimate the total annual payout to be around $1.6 trillion."

Are you crazy? No, I am serious are you crazy? Do you think those social programs should be celebrated? You do know they are one of the biggest reasons this country is in 37.5 trillion debt, accounting for more than 1/3 of our annual expenditures don't you? They are a shining example of what happens when you let government run large social programs. They are expensive, inefficient and let's be honest insolvent but hey just print more money or "tax" the mean old billionaires that are "paying their fair share" amirite?

New Mexico should add a line to their income tax returns. It should state "Please reduce my refund, or increase what I owe, by $XXXX and use it to fund child care.

I bet they would raise a couple thousand dollars easily.

I used Google for this search, I assume that you trust Google still…

In 2015 the US Government took in $3.3 trillion in taxes, in 2024 we took in right at $5 trillion and that is with tax cuts built in…so we have had a $1.7 trillion increase in the amount of taxes taken in per year and yet we need to increase taxes? Seems like we have a spending problem…

This might be an indication of how well it will work given the implementer...

I would like to see this minus federal money being kicked over for highways

Texas is enormous and receives a lot of federal funding for interstate highways that are for the good of the country

New York is tiny with a large population.

Point being the kind of money we're getting from the feds. It's probably not quite the same type of money that other states are getting.

Not sure in these numbers but often these number include military spending within the state, if a state has a large %age of its population in the military it skews the numbers.

The guaranteed outcome (not if, when):
- program success(!!) will be touted
- freeloading families with 8 kids will move in
- subsidized housing will be expanded to house these new New Mexicans
- program will be expanded to cover more folks
- taxes will be substantially raised on the "rich" to cover the shortfall
- the "rich" will begin to move out

Btw did they pass a companion bill to confiscate wealth from those moving out? If not they better get busy.
I don't think you know me.

I'm shocked that the left thinks this is free childcare.

For you and the other dozen posters who think this is some clever point, literally EVERYONE understands government subsidized programs are paid through taxes.

It's not scoring a point to play the semantics game over the word choice 'free' (a word I never used, but was posted in the article) when literally everyone understands how social services work.

I wasn't comparing the US to those countries but highlighting the brain dead response about 'communism' when the only countries that provide completely free childcare are not communist.

Basically, this board has an issue where the govt providing ANY sort of social services is communist (just a basic definitional and practical delusion).

You're pointing to the 5'-6' area of the pool and calling it something different than the rest of the pool and expecting it to matter what it is called. It doesn't matter what it is called, it works in reality the same way as the rest of the budget because there IS NO TRUST FUND, only the general budget.

Now go ahead and talk about what the program has to do when they have shortfalls. I am sure that you know it involves issuing debt in the form or Treasury bonds which then have to be paid back with interest usually over a 10-30 year period. Again it's the world's largest ponzi scheme where we are all forced to pay more into a program then we will ever get out of it.
