I will watch with curiosity to see how it works. I'm glad this is a state thing and not the federal gov doing it.
Our taxes already pay for childcare for school age kids, this just extends it to birth.

I think it will probably not work out economically, but I'm interested to see how it goes.

Couple of things...

1. 62% of children under age 5 are in child care. Nevada has 215k children under 5. ~133k kids in childcare.
2. There is already a shortage of childcare providers/slots. With 3 waitlisted for every slot in NV currently.
3.. How are they going to pay for this extra 2 billion? 133,000 x $12,000 = 1,915,200,000/yr.

The percentage of childcare will only go up after this.

Ummm, might want to calibrate your location meter.

NM.// you are right.

It is safe, free and effective childcare... Where have I heard something like that before?

The problem is not so much that it's a bad idea. There are arguments about why it could be a great idea.

The problem is that the government will **** it up. They will pick and choose winners and losers.

The people themselves will **** it up because the people themselves suck, and have always sucked and will never stop sucking.

If I wanted to make something super expensive and lower the quality of something as quickly as possible, the only thing I would have to do is have it become a government provided service.

Agreed I ask people all the time name me 1 large government program that is efficient meaning on time, on budget, etc. They are never able to provide me with anything of substance because it is the nature of government to not be efficient which is why you should want less not more government programs.

Will the state run these child care facilities? Or is this a voucher program?

I bet a voucher program would work great in primary education in Texas. Don't you think?

Those are not even closely related.
The schools in Texas are already funded through taxes. This tax revenue is then used by individual families to fund the school of their choice.
The program New Mexico is proposing is not funded currently. That means new tax revenue must be added or the budgets of other state funded programs be cut or a combination of both.
Most likely there is monumental grift of these funds going into the pockets of certain politicians and their cronies that will own/manage child care companies.
Among the latter, under pretence of governing they have divided their nations into two classes, wolves and sheep.”

In 2022, there were 452 private child care businesses in New Mexico. Most of these will likely go out of business now.

New Mexico has become the first state in the country to guarantee universal child care to families residing in the state.

New Mexico families will be eligible for free child care for infants and toddlers starting Nov. 1, no matter their incomes. The groundbreaking initiative will require no co-pays from families.

The typical New Mexico family is expected to save over $12,000 per child annually with the initiative.

This is awesome. Hope it serves as a (positive) test case for other states to follow suit!

I would like to see this minus federal money being kicked over for highways

Texas is enormous and receives a lot of federal funding for interstate highways that are for the good of the country

New York is tiny with a large population.

Point being the kind of money we're getting from the feds. It's probably not quite the same type of money that other states are getting.

The same way we pay for billions of extra dollars to be spent on ICE, the military, and Israel. Spending money on these things is never questioned. Spending money on things that helps everyday people? That is scrutinized to the max.

I'm assuming no one has commented on your post because they have you blocked. What a monumentally idiotic take! You don't think border control (to include getting rid of terrorists, pedophiles, murderers, etc) is worthy of Govt spending? Military? You have got to be kidding me! As for Israel, I think most would agree not to send any money to any foreign Nation until we're out of debt and only if direly needed for some type of catastrophe and even then only very sparingly. Of course they are questioned, no one wants taxpayer money spent on a $1000 hammer. All spending should be scrutinized to the max! I feel like I'm taking crazy pills! Dumb take is dumb.

So if benefits exceed income, there will be a shortfall; the government won't be able to pay all the benefits it owes. To distribute this shortfall "fairly," the government would cut everyone's benefit by about 20%. If you were entitled to $1k per month, you'd receive only $800 per month. You'd still get something, but not as much as you're entitled to under the current formula.

They will never, ever cut benefits. That would be political suicide and they know it. They will fund the shortfall from more deficit spending, adding to the debt.

We should get tax cuts. This country does not have an income problem it has a spending problem. In fact we take in nearly 5x more in tax revenue than the next closest country.

War on Poverty...somehow we've spent over $30,000,000,000,000 to help people take care of themselves and here we are still...

In the history of our nation, no program has lifted more people out of poverty than Social Security. By almost every metric, SS is arguably the most successful government policy the nation has ever created. A program that by design funds itself through FICA and has no impact on the deficit, budget, or debt.

Everyone i know living solely off SS lives in poverty. If i could opt out of it, i would have done it years ago and invested it myself.

Incredible how dumb the supporters are of this. Zero understanding of economics or human behavior. The worst state in the country making itself even worse with more government welfare.

And then using the old tactic of comparing this to small, largely mono-ethnic white countries that have wholly differetn cultures than what New Mexico has. Comparing the people of AQB to Norway? Laughably stupid and embarrassing.

When the "rich pay their fair share" It's only when we take from them that everybody else prospers. I have that on good authority since it is 100% the same dumbass talking point of all the libs.

No. My grandfather knew the bull**** Social Security program for what it was and refused Roosevelt dimes in change when they were introduced in 1959. Nickels and pennies ,yes, if not available he left without and taking the loss. That was even when Social Security was intended to be a supplement to retirement not the main source of retirement income.
If I could have invested all the money I and the companies I worked for paid into Social Security into equities my retirement income would be exponentially higher.

so how are they calculating the current cost of child healthcare at $12k/year per child?

That seems ridiculously high. Are they assuming that with this new coverage these parents won't have to pay for medical insurance coverage for their kids and will have more take home pay? Because they will still have to pay for medical for the parents - the insurance is not going to be that much lower.

True, but ze/zir mentioned other countries specifically as examples of socialist "utopias". Although I do think those other countries are seeing an invasion to some degree, just a little behind UK and Sweden.
