"White" included 'Mescans, and even Italians, in most places. Maybe so long as someone isn't African, Asian, Indian (dot), they're automatically "White" by default.

I hear you.

My wife's grandfather was first-generation Italian, and he was never once called, much less seen, as white by the whites in the community he lived in. That luxury (his words) only came for his grandchildren, many decades later.

My grandfather, who was first generation to be born in US, has fun stories of New Orleans and signs associating Italians with another minority using fun slurs.

Always fun to share the history of Columbus Day when someone complains about a holiday for a white man. Um, you do know it is from the largest lynching in US history and the lynched were Italians?

Sometimes, admittedly in weak moments, I find myself thinking that the color of your skin is a really awful way to categorize people. Thinking that maybe cultural considerations mean more than your outward appearance. Or maybe our government organizations shouldn't be in the business of categorizing people at all, but rather they should have a set of rules, like laws or something, that they follow without giving special consideration to any differences in any group or individual's demographic criteria.

For instance, had a prof who lived in Kenya for several years. He and his wife had kids while there. His family was flying back to the States but had to go through Orly (Paris) and their oldest was about five and wandered up to a black guy in the airport and started speaking Swahili to him. All of the other black people in his life spoke Swahili, so why wouldn't that guy, right? Childhood but also logic.

We know what we know by comparisons. Part of the learning process...that continues for our lives.

Racially, there are 3 "races" :

White
Black
Asian

Which one best fits for Mexicans? Yes, we're "white", as far as that goes. That's where ethnicity plays a part: "Hispanic". Therefore, a Mexican would be a "white Hispanic". A Dominican or Puerto Rican could be either that or a "black Hispanic".
