Like on the episode of Gilligan's Island when they planted vegetables from radioactive seeds?

Something to keep in mind is that the Pacific Ocean currents move from Bikini Atoll toward Indonesia. There is a metric boatload of fallout shoddily buried at Bikini which was done after locals started getting sick from Cs-137 propagating into their crops and other vegetation. It would not surprise me if the repositories are leaching radioactive material to be carried toward SE Asia.

You should be buying freshwater shrimp from the UK.

I can almost always tell the difference between Gulf of America shrimp and those from Vietnam and places like that. The texture is not the same as American shrimp.

I'm not saying that's not possible but it's 2100 miles from Bikini Atoll to the nearest easternmost Indonesian Islands. That's a lot of dilution.

Give it time, they could eat themselves.

This shrimp business is giving Fallout 4 vibes.

I was HEB last month and the dude in front of me bought the frozen Indonesian shrimp for like $10.99/pound. They had fresh caught GOA shrimp on sale for $7.99/pound.

A lot of times, they offer the garbage shrimp peeled, so you'll have some incentive to buy it. It doesn't work on me, as I don't mind peeling and deveining it.

You're often better off buying the frozen shrimp and thawing them yourself. A lot of the "fresh" shrimp on the counter was frozen beforehand, and thawed to display. Unless the "fresh, never frozen" shrimp got to the store that day, buy the frozen stuff.

I don't care about deveining, but I don't love peeling the shrimp. If the choice is Gulf of America versus Asia, I'll choose the Gulf every time, even if I have to peel it.

Gulf boats have gone to IQF instead of ice for their catch.

Do we send these shrimp to Africa like we do the t-shirts & hats for the losing sports team in a championship game?

Good point. I grew up on the coast so i prefer fresh never frozen and not peeled.

We had a major problem in Alabama/Florida gulf coast where restaurants were hiding the source (or even lying about the source) of their Shrimp.

I generally don't like regulation... but our local shrimpers were dealing with lying retailers and distributors labelling/misrepresenting source. Now if you serve shrimp you have to post if you may be sourcing shrimp from outside of our area. Demand for local shrimp has increased sharply as well - helping local shrimpers.

Just go to the coast and buy in bulk fresh off the boat. I try to get 50-100 lbs at a time, take them home, de-head and freeze them in 1 or 2 gallon containers.

There is a lot of food chain following the currents between them to build up concentrations. Bikini is the largest source of Cs-137 in the region. F*kushima fallout was carried eastward so it most likely isn't from there.

I have zero problem with regs requiring origin of food to be clearly labeled

Seafood can be frozen multiple times and still be labeled as "fresh".

All of the shrimp you see in grocery stores has been frozen. About the only way you get real fresh, never frozen, is to buy it right off the boat.

One of the really crappy things about almost every single Texas coastal town or area - we have jack and squat for seafood markets. I'd love for one like they have up in Seattle to develop in Galveston or thereabouts, but there just isn't much at all.

Most of the shrimpers and commercial fishermen go through wholesalers like Katie's (who is a POS). Freeport killed its once massive shrimping industry about 20-25 years ago when they ED'd the packing houses out of business so they could build a marina instead.

Matagorda/Palacious still has a pretty decent fleet, as does Rockport/AP. But a whole lot of the shrimping fleet these days is Vietnamese who aren't exactly famous for following regs.
