That's the NYT title. The former gov has taken on psychedelics for treatment of PTSD in combat vets, addiction, and etc. This NYT article and the comments below it are very interesting!

Quote:

Since that experience (treatment with a powerful psychotropic drug called ibogaine), Mr. Perry, 75, a social conservative, has emerged as a leading champion of ibogaine as a potential treatment for brain trauma, addiction and even cognitive decline.

He was an unlikely keynote speaker at the Psychedelic Science Conference in Denver in June. His allies in the effort include the former senator Kyrsten Sinema, a progressive on social issues who underwent ibogaine treatment in May with the aim of preventing dementia of the sort that claimed her grandmother a few years ago. In an interview, Ms. Sinema described Mr. Perry as "one of the few very conservative individuals in this space, with high credibility among what I'd call a nontraditional audience for psychedelic medicine."

To Mr. Perry, Ms. Sinema and several others who described their ibogaine experiences for this article, the psychoactive compound derived from the bark of the Tabernanthe iboga plant, a Central African rain forest shrub, is a kind of miracle drug. They say it can arrest substance abuse, reduce suicides, reverse neurodegenerative disorders, extend brain life and even reconnect individuals to their spirituality.

"It has literally given people their lives back," Mr. Perry said. Small recent studies have suggested the drug holds unusual therapeutic potential. One treatment with ibogaine has been shown to achieve significant results.

TLDR; Perry convinced the TxLeg and Abbott to fund a $50 mil study on this treatment.

His Joe Rogan interview was very informative as well. Rick has a lot of political baggage, but he was very effective as a politician. Hopefully something gets done.

Honest question, what is his political baggage? I know he had some terrible debates, but outside of NGO's calling stupid, what were his trips?

You are correct it's not really baggage he just flamed out spectacularly as he tried to go for the highest office in the land

That kind of public failure creates a new dynamic. Both him and Jeb!! Went from Successful Governors in very important states to being the butt of many jokes which is quite a fall.

Glad he is finding something to keep him busy

He had a great one while debating.

From listening to some Rogan and Shawn Ryan takes on this, I do think a controlled legalization of this makes sense, though I don't claim to understand the chemistry/real science behind it. If it helps folks with PTSD etc. I just figure it's worth it.

Let he who has not forgotten the names of a couple of Cabinet departments he wants to eliminate during a Presidential debate while tripping balls on Vicodin and a Central African rain forest shrub cast the first stone.

I don't know about political baggage. He did make the terrible mistake of the HPV vaccine mandate. He also had the terrible flub in the presidential debate forgetting the name of the dept of education. That pretty much did him in.

Anyone remember the "if you can just let us go..." moment when he and his aide got pulled by DPS for speeding on US 290?

Oh look, another drug that miraculously solves every problem. I've never seen that before. We just need to legalize this one last drug…

I mean, we don't want folks as pickled as Ozzy was in his last 40 or so years on earth, but…username doesn't check out.

50 Million from Texas Taxpayers to study this drug. Wow. That's a bold strategy.

At least Rick Perry was smart enough to get into politics and out of cotton farming after a few years.

Man, Ozzy, since retirement you've changed.

Something different about you. Can't quite put my finger on it.

That issue with the debate where he messed up so bad was not really fair. My closest friend was on his DPS protective detail during his campaign. He (Gov. Perry) had been having horrendous lower back problems and was in very bad pain. A few days before the debate he had major surgery on his lower back in Houston. The procedure was a new stem cell surgery or something like that. Some of the details about it were online.
My buddy said he was in terrible pain right before the debate and he remarked that he didn't even know how he was able to make the flight and get up on that stage that night….as he had just had the surgery a day or two earlier.
No wonder he wasn't himself. Too bad it went that way.

Actually there has been a lot of evidence that micro-doses of certain psychedelics helps with depression and PTSD.

This isn't about using it in high doses recreationally and going on trips. It is using it in a controlled, medical setting.

Psychedelics should never be legalized for recreational use, but if they have a medical benefit when used in a very specific way, then allow it for that purpose only.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

I will never forget Jeff Ward calling him the Governor and State Gynecologist 18 years ago because he was all over the controversy around the HPV vaccine when it first came out. Those were the days of drive-time radio.

Endorsing Dade Phelan might have gained him some favor with the Burrowcrats to get his study approved.

He's now endorsing Cornyn, so his "conservative" label has faded a bit.

Sorry, my only experience is with Iocane. I've spent the last few years building up an immunity to Iocane powder.

Yeah, pretty crazy how a bad moment on national TV can destroy a career. Given both were worse than bad lol.
