Successive governments, both Labour and the Conservatives have ignored the issue and in some cases buried it.
The UK left the EU and so the EU governments are apathetic and sometimes actively encourage or at a minimum, ignore migrants traveling across Europe to get to the UK. Why do they head there? It's a mix of lax immigration laws, no ID cards, language, benefits offered to newcomers, and a VERY high chance you'll be allowed to remain if you claim asylum if you're from certain countries. So, many destroy their passports and head to people smugglers and come over on boats.

As usual, anyone who objected to this was screamed at by left wing do gooders who deemed them racist so many people kept quiet. Exactly what led up to Brexit. Add to that, the UK is still a member of the European Court of Human Rights, so you have many immigration lawyers (many not born in the UK but now legally living there) fighting for their right to remain, even when they commit the most terrible crimes. This year an Albanian criminal was allowed to stay in Britain partly because his ten-year-old son does not like foreign chicken nuggets.

And a paedophile who attacked a teenage girl was allowed to stay because he is an alcoholic.

Let's say the people heading to the UK are not always the brightest or the best. And it's mostly single young men of fighting age, usually Muslim, often from cultures that do not mix well with the west unless they completely can assimilate. Most don't.

The UK currently spends almost $7 billion USD a year supporting these illegal migrants.

But, illegal immigration has happened and is continuing to happen at such an accelerated rate that people are starting to really become angry and face the wrath of the government. They're starting to stand up to it.
