This is a good thing. We have a circular reference problem in this country when it comes to the poor. We give benefits with no strings and the poor don't get off nearly enough, and then many never escape poverty. Then obesity at that scale really runs up healthcare needs and costs. It's been completely broken for a long time.

What does the "S" stand for in "SNAP"? Buy your own sodas.

I was going to say the exact same thing. Problem is, they probably wouldn't even be able to tell you what that word means. In America, you can be extremely dumb and lazy and still live a life of luxury compared to the rest of the world….all at someone else's expense of course. We are already a socialist country. We just don't like to admit it.

While I'll take any wins we can get, just like all the others this one is not substantial enough to correct course. The whole thing should be eliminated altogether.

I believe using EBT cards at 7-Elevens is a relatively recent phenomenon, I'm pretty sure Obama-era. A way to cure food deserts, with sugary drinks and Snickers bars at taxpayer expense.

Tbf, it wasn't wrong. I grew up in rural Texas (but only 30 mins from a decent size town) and most lower middle class and up people with money did grocery shopping at this larger town. Poor people in that area relied on these two bodega type of stores / marts that had very little non-deli produce and meat. Good stores don't really survive in low-income areas, which makes sense.

Who will pick up the Tab?

I can't give you a tab unless you order something.

Coca-Cola discontinued Tab in 2020, so this joke may be lost on younger people.

OK, I'll have a Pepsi Free instead.

SNAP provides free Pepsi.

Btw,

Does Pepsi Fee contain any Pepsi?

Realistically, if you cannot afford food then you do not have the bandwidth to shop for it and cook it either.

My fix would be a bit too authoritarian for most, but it would be efficient.

OK, but why aren't there limits on what kinds of food you can buy with EBT even at a convenience store? It seems to be anything edible is fair game. If EBT will only pay for certain things, convenience stores will start carrying them so they can get the government money. Deli meats and fresh produce are probably not reasonable for your typical Quickie Mart, but something nutritious. Taxpayers should not have to pay for cokes and candy.

Sounds you can't afford food because you don't have a job, most likely, seems to me you have lots of free time to shop and cook. I work full time and cook usually six nights a week.

It is not for lack of time, but ability of the person to make their own decisions.

So you're saying people are on SNAP and EBT becuase they're too stupid to go to the store, that's interesting. I'd argue it's mostly because they're lazy and just want to use their own money for smokes, booze, weed, and lotto.

In fact, I would argue that if you're too incompetent to go the grocery store and buy a pack of chicken and canned veggies to cook at home you're probably a danger to yourself and society and should be institutionalized.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
A lot of people are just dumb and will flow through society as it is constructed with the path of least resistance. If they had their own money, they would still be buying the crap because those are the easiest most available options. If they were forced to walk to the store and buy healthier food, they would just do that too.

We could run a eugenics program and never have this issue again or just institutionalize them and get zero benefits while funding their existence as we are currently doing. Which the only positive benefit of the latter is that we no longer have to see them be disgusting in the public sphere. However, forcing the only option to be healthy is going to have greater positive benefit on society because these people are just going to work, eat whatever you put in front of them, sleep, and repeat.

Most people on welfare work to some degree, so we can still get that benefit and it is not like they are completely useless, but they do not make good personal decisions. If we are going to pay for their food one way or another, then we should tailor it so that they provide the greatest value possible. Also, we will not have to pay for their diabetes and heart medication on top of the food.

On the whole I have no problem with feeding hungry Americans. But if we're going to do it, it needs to be staples only, bag of beans, rice, fruits, veggies, chicken and ground beef.

You can show up to the store and get your pre-packed bag for the week. Want to eat something different then they should be buying it themselves.

Yeah, I agree with you for the most part. That would be probably the best option that would be acceptable to enough people to implement. Other than the lobbyists and those gullible enough to agree with them.

Yep, the market will adjust. Capitalism is efficient and will find a way to provide what people want or need. Poor people decades ago found ways to feed themselves. They worked and many had gardens. There's not a lack of jobs in America there's just a lack of Americans willing to do those jobs. Massive entitlement programs is the wall between the jobs and the workers to perform them.

Ask anyone who has ever worked as a sacker (back when they actually took bags to your car) or a cashier, how much those paying with food stamps really needed them.

Countless folks paying with food stamps and putting groceries in their Cadillac. I got yelled at in the early '90's when I tried to manually shut this food stamp ladies trunk. It had electric close, something I had never hear of, yet she paid with food stamps.

Had a lady paying for baby formula with WIC laughing about how expensive it is and thank God she doesn't have to pay for it. She bought a carton of cigs with check.

Happened all the time.

Can and will confirm. Tom Thumb 2000-2003

Wait until you guys learn you can use SNAP/EBT to buy a double bacon cheeseburger, fries, and milkshake combo at Braum's because it technically is a grocery store.

Back when they paid with actual food stamps (looked a bit like Monopoly money), if they received change under $1, then they actually received change. If over $1 the change was in food stamps.

Had a lady get each kid to buy a piece of candy sold by the weight. She got 95 cents in change. Did that three times and bought cigarettes..back when a box of Marlboro lights was about $2.50.
