My God some of the replies are dumb.I understand the intent, but I’ll never be sold on this. Why can’t a portion of the SNAP benefits be allotted for indulgences? Many healthy Americans adhere to an 80/20 principle when it comes to their diet. An occasional Coke isn’t gonna cause diabetes.

My dad is 85 and has SNAP and loves Coke.
Why shouldn’t he he able to enjoy a Coke once in a while?Government overreach like banning soda with food stamps paternalistically strips low-income families of personal choice without tackling corporate greed or the real roots of obesity, turning aid into control.

If your dad wants a Coke then you go buy him one. Taxpayers should be under no obligation to do so.Waffledynamics said:Not sure I agree with this.

Ask anyone who has ever worked as a slacker (back when they actually took bags to your car) or a cashier, how much those paying with food stamps really needed them.
Countless folks paying with food stamps and putting groceries in their Cadillac. I got yelled at in the early '90's when I tried to manually shut this food stamp ladies trunk. It had electric close, something I had never hear of, yet she paid with food stamps.
Had a lady paying for baby formula with WIC laughing about how expensive it is and thank God she doesn't have to pay for it. She bought a carton of cigs with check.
Happened all the time.

A bill like this has come up nearly every session in Texas but it always gets buried and lost in committee. The junk food lobbies are MUCH richer than people interested in child health.

This is very much overdue. The poor kids I see on medicaid have a much higher rate of morbid obesity than the well off families. The reason those convience stores stock only junk is that they only sell junk and at a large percent to food stamps. If that well dries up they will stock up with foods that are covered in no time. And with food delivery easily available now I don't want to hear about food deserts.

And why isn't it already that way? I know WIC is policed pretty closely. Can only buy regular Cheerios with it, not honey nut.

In 2017, Philadelphia implemented a tax on sweetened beverages, also called the soda tax. The idea was that it would pay for early childhood education. Health advocates also supported it, arguing that sugary drinks are tied to obesity and that a tax would help.

She and a group of researchers went deeper to look at electronic health records to compare the body mass index of thousands of patients in Philadelphia, versus people who live outside the city. They found that BMI increased over time in both areas, but the rate at which BMI went up was slower for people in Philadelphia. The new article, which was published this month in the Lancet Regional Health Americas, concludes that there was "limited evidence" of reduced BMI and obesity prevalence in Philadelphia, due to the tax.

SNAP theft is a HUGE problem and most of it involves skimming benefit cards and selling the info to be used in other states. A friend of mine works in SNAP administration in CA and he called me up to help him figure out an address in Houston that turned out to be a big HEB store where ~400 of his benefit recipient's stolen benefits were being used.
I wish there were a way to geofence these benefits. That might help cut down on some of the fraud. Further, using the same type of fraud detection banks use to detect credit card fraud could be beneficial and more cost-effective than just replacing the stolen benefits, which is the standard practice. Ultimately, this will probably save taxpayers more money than limiting which foods can be purchased.

I am glad Human Health and Services Secretary Robert Kenndy Jr. is taking action to fully ban food stamps from being used to obtain sugary sweets because food stamps are intended to keep you from starving. If they want to consume deserts and soda occasionally, they should pay for it themselves.

I can't give you a tab unless you order something.
Coca-Cola discontinued Tab in 2020, so this joke may be lost on younger people.

As are grocery and C-store lobbies.
I see it all the time - family comes in to a C-store and buys $50 worth of sodas, candy and chips - and whips out the SNAP card. Makes me ill every time.

Because a lot of time and money is spent lobbying to make it where you can buy anything with food stamps, by both food manufacturers and retailers alike.
7-11 will take that food stamp money just like HEB will.
