Musk sees there's no putting this horse back in the barn so might as well have the biggest, fastest horse in the stable.

AI data centers won't use grid power. They will have their own power station. The grid can't keep up with data center needs and isn't reliable enough.

But seriously... the power needed for these training centers is enormous. Colossus 1 and 2 are in Tennessee. Colossus 1 consumes .7% of Tennessee's power output, and Colossus 2 will consume 3.2%.

xAI has temporarily deployed 17-35 methane gas turbines in South Memphis to generate 35-72 MW. Long term, xAI is funding a $24 million substation to provide a stable 150 MW from MLGW, expected to be operational by late 2025.

Invest in utilities and substation EPC contractors.

Vistra Energy tripled last year expecting this. If you're just now thinking of moving into this space, you're too late.

There is a gas turbine shortage. Orders for new turbines out to 2030. I'd say it's not too late if you find companies that can fill the demand for BASELOAD power.

He has always been all in. Anyone who has worked at any of his companies knows this.

I'm looking at Energy Transfer ($ET).

Also commodities. Copper, is obvious but anything related to electrical generation and labor to fabricate and install. Private ventures into manufacturing are going to make bank.

Transformers, HV breakers, capacitor banks...all necessary to these projects and all have VERY long lead times.

ABB / Hitachi
Siemens

Virginia Transformer is looking to sell as part of the frenzy.

Anybody remember Colossus: The Forbin Project book and movie from circa 1970. Wonder if project named after that.

Grok was coined in 1961s Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Heinlein. Elon is recycling.

I had no idea about this so I asked grok, pretty interesting sounding book and makes sense that Elon would use a term from a book that is a bit libertarian and counter culture for it's time. Now I need to add that one to my reading list!

SSMR's would be a lot more efficient for power production.

Not a fan of the headfirst dive into the AI crap, but if it at least pushed us out of the stupid when it comes to nuclear, especially Gen4 SSMR's....then it may be worth it.

SSMR is what?
Thanks on advance

Standing Seam Metal Roof!

Really, SMR is Small Modular Reactor.
Not sure what the added S is.

Thank you, when I did a search I came up with, you guessed it. Standing Seam Metal Roof also . I must have had a brain lapse to not see Small Modular Reactor.

The hyperscalers are trying to tap in to the power source before the grid. The State regulators do not like that because they would be prioritized over the citizens of their States.

We aren't generating anywhere near the need. China is building faster and 100X capacity we are because the State regulators are bureaucratic dumbasses.

Today we're winning the AI race but will lose in 10 years if we don't move MUCH faster to generate more power.

china is building faster b/c they use coal and don't care about emissions.

US Federal regulations are a bigger hinderance than the state to producing power.

Yes agree. And we chose to not pursue nuclear after 3 mile island. The States regulators are a huge problem.

We better drill baby drill.

Give us a fast track to modular nukes and we will pay for it all. It will be like we were never here. There is just so much uncertainty that nobody is willing to take that gamble. The utility play for as much power is needed is a crapshoot.

A consultant told me about 6 months ago, "There is not enough steel in the world for transmission construction to meet the short-term needs of datacenters," I believe them.
Today, unfortunately, many Americans have good reason to fear that they will be victimized if they are unable to protect themselves. And today, no less than in 1791, the Second Amendment guarantees their right to do so. - Justice Samuel Alito 2022

Maybe it will force us to build more efficient hardware. Does it take a significant portion of a state's power generation capabilities to train a human? Nope.
No, I don't care what CNN or MSNBC said this time
