OK, dear diary....

I never drank coke. Diabetic forever. The diet sodas were OK for the first 55 or so years of my life.

However, the "zero sugar" replacements to the "diet" sodas are way, WAY better. I compared the regular coke and doctor pepper drinks to the zero sugar coke and doctor pepper, and I like the zero sugar stuff.

My wife loves the real sugar doctor pepper and the Mexico cokes. I may have to compare those one day.

OK, diary entry over.

Refined sugar isn't all that natural and good for you either. It's a 140 calorie soda. It's not going to be good for you regardless of sweetener.

True, but sugar tastes infinitely better, IMHO, than corn syrup.

Good Trump.

Haven't touched a soda with calories in decades. One of the best changes for my health I've done over the years.

Unless you mean you switched to straight soda water, fake sugar is worse for you than real sugar.

In baseball, some people are genetically blessed with 100 mph arms yet manage to go through life throwing 90 mph fastballs. Others are genetically gifted with 75 mph arms and, by doing the right things for their body, end up throwing 85 mph fastballs. If a guy is going to have Willie's take on life you better hope you have that 100 mph arm.

Btw, I hope you're doing well Rocky!

"Real" is always better than artificial. That said, it is best to reduce sugar as much as possible. I LOVE SUGAR. But I am trying to my best to cut down. We cannot avoid sugar in today's world but we can make a dent in our intake.

Back in the A&M days, I never drank water, I used to drink A+ Cola. Every day. Very unhealthy but being young helps.

Refined sugar isn't all that real either.

To take your point further, another issue is the "refined" part. Sugar cane to refined sugar is a 10:1 ratio. If you chew on sugar cane all day you would probably be fine.

But no one does that because sugar cane isn't very sweet.

I'm inclined to believe they may start doing limited bottlings with real sugar, but Coca-Cola has flat out said they aren't getting rid of HFCS.

Ain't nothin' finer than an ice cold coke or Dublin with real sugar on a hot summer day. Like I tell my wife, if cutting out sweets and sugars means I die a few years early, so be it. I would rather enjoy a shorter life than be miserable with a longer one.

After my dad had a heart attack, I and my brothers were over at their place. My mom started *****in at us about our dietary habits, going on about salads and such. After 10 mins or so, I told her I'm not going to eat crap I don't like so I can live longer to eat more of the crap I don't like. My genetics laughed at me and I had my first heart attack 11 years later at the ripe old age of 37.

As we get older, health becoems very very important. I have seen 75+ people bedridden in my family. Or get sick with bad diseases. I don't know what will happen to me, but I hope to avoid it. I just hope I die in my sleep with my moment comes.

Good for you.

I work ER and am amazed at people that can't do simple things like walk up 3 steps or that take a 10 mins to get out of a high vehicle because they have to be careful with joint/hip pain due to being 200+ lbs overweight.

Yes, being overweight is a big problem in America. Look at pictures from the 70s and look at people now. Almost no woman cooks at home anymore. Throwing processed food packages in the microwave isn't cooking. Full of oil, sugar and salt which leads to various diseases as we grow older. Pill popping is a part of life in this country. I have managed to stay away from all of that, I am not on any medication and rarely get sick. Muscle mass decrease is an issue in our later years so I started weights again.

We have to do it NOW in order to have the best possible senior years.

(I am no expert on this, but my wife is big on this so I am regurgitating whatever she says)

Most amazing thing to me about that pic is that "impeachment" used to be kind of a big deal politically. Not so much anymore. But yeah, we're clearly fatter now. No question about that.

First thing I noticed was the swastika. Apparently the left has been calling/implying that everyone who isn't in line with them are Nazis since the 60s/70s?

Seriously?

We could argue the health of our citizens should be the number 1 or 2 priority of this administration and our government which includes food. We are ingesting poisons every single day. That's not an exaggeration and I'm not a wackadoo.

High fructose corn syrup is TERRIBLE for us.

Have you followed the dementia hypothesis on the food pyramid and our attack against fats and cholesterol? Our brains NEED it and we say it's so bad for us. Just one example of what the food lobbyists have done to us.

I drink 4-6 sodas per year. Either Mexican Coke, Dublin Dr Pepper, or a craft soda with real sugar. I have always found soda with HFCS to not be very good even as a child. A real soda on ice is hard to beat.

It's amazing how much weight you can lose just cutting out sugar sodas I lost 30 lbs a few years ago and have kept it off. I occasionally have a zero-sugar one with a meal but I drink mostly water and 2 % milk.

Yup. All you have to do to lose weight is cut the carbs. Eliminating sodas, candy bars, bread and potatoes works wonders.

I think most people think it tastes better. I haven't had a coke in years and coke was the only soda I liked. I can't stand the after taste of artificial sweeteners. If they do bring back cane sugar coke I may have an ice cold one occasionally.

I'd be curious to do a real taste test on that vs what is psychological. The Pepsi Paradox is an example. The majority of people will tell you they prefer Coke, but when given blind taste tests, Pepsi consistently wins. Pepsi kicking their ass at taste tests is what set off the misguided journey to New Coke. There is a very strong, proven psychological bias that comes into play with soda preferences that do not line up with actual taste preference

We have a woman on this hallway that drinks 2 2 liters of regular soda a day, in addition to whatever she gets from fast food

Of course she is 300 pounds and wears diapers. Plus smokes 2 cigarettes in the 15 minutes allotted every hour

My grandfather used to grow sugar cane when I was young. Come harvest time, getting a piece of a stalk to chew and suck on was a treat. Then he would go to a mill, complete with millstone and donkey going round and round to extract the juice. From the juice he would make his own cane syrup every year. Family members would fight over getting gallons of his cane syrup, it was that good. Beat the hell out of maple syrup on pancakes, waffles and biscuits. Made great pecan pies, too, instead of Karo corn syrup.

I never believed that at all. I've been served "Coke" at a restaurant taken one sip and ask "is this Coca-Cola" then answer invariably being "no, it's Pepsi". Anyone that can't tell the difference isn't paying attention, or it's a really poor fountain mix of Coke."

Believe what you want. They've done it over and over. You may be able to tell. Many can't. And I'd lay good money that the group that can't tell/prefers the other really grows when the only difference is the nuance of processed sugar vs processed hfcs.

Sodas are horrible for you. I stopped drinking them regularly around 14 years ago. I may have a coke once a month now, and usually on a special occasion.

Our country's addiction to sugar is one of our biggest health issues. It's a amazing how little sweetener you actually need when you stop eating sugar. According to a 2023 Harvard Health story, the average Amercan ingests nearly 77g of added sugar, a day. That is an insane amount of sugar. If you eat this much sugar, then you end up needing a ton of sugar for you to think something is sweet.

Did a taste test at Christmas with regular Dr. Pepper and the real sugar stuff. We had a house of about 20 people in which 12 did the taste test.

They all agreed they could tell the difference in the two and all said they liked the Dr. Pepper with sugar over the regular Dr. Pepper.

Wife likes the Mexico Coke, but she has never done a blind taste test, so it could be just she thinks she likes it better. May have to do that test in the near future.

About once a year I have the urge to go to 7-11 for a Slurpee.

The only flavor that was frozen was Dr. Pepper at a nearby 7-11.

I rarely drink soft drinks...almost alway unsweet iced tea or coffee... took one sip of that Dr Pepper Slurpee and was stunned at how sweet it was... the syrup to water ratio had to be off.

I am sure kids, orhers had no prob. w/ it.

Could not drink 1/3 of it.... instant diabetes in a 20 oz cup.

Americans burn more calories daily than people living traditional lifestyles in developing countries. Yet we're also significantly fatter. How can that be?

A Duke University study of 4,213 people spanning 34 populations worldwide from Tanzanian hunter-gatherers to Norwegian office workers shows that expanding waistlines have little to do with becoming less active. What we eat, not how much we move, is the real driver.

The real difference between countries wasn't how much people moved. It was what they ate.
Among the 25 populations where dietary data were available, one trend stood out clearly: the more ultra-processed foods people consumed, the more body fat they tended to carry.

My late Mom's older brother was in the Navy during WWII stationed in Florida. He had a sweetheart, later wife, who was from Key West. Her Dad was British, her Mom Cuban and they had a very sizeable lot for Key West enabling them to grow a lot of fruit trees and avocado trees. Breakfast was fresh avocados with Key Lime juice smeared over freshly baked Cuban bread, with sea salt and pepper. He brought that back to my Mom well before I was born.

So I was eating "avocado toast" for over 65 years. I was amused when something I had been eating all of my life suddenly became a fad, a few years back.
