Quote:

President Trump said Coca-Cola agreed to use cane sugar in its namesake soda, following criticism of sweeteners such as high-fructose corn syrup by Trump's health secretary.

A Coca-Cola spokeswoman said the company appreciated Trump's enthusiasm for its brand. "More details on new innovative offerings within our Coca-Cola product range will be shared soon," she said.

U.S. Coke bottlers switched to high-fructose corn syrup in the 1980s in a cost-cutting effort. But sugar has held cachet for many as better-tasting. Mexican-made Coke with sugar, in a glass bottle, for years has been a trendy drink in the U.S.

Let's hope Coke eliminates HFCS entirely from their product line. Corn syrup is turrible. And it ain't natural. This could rank up there with one of his best accomplishments if it happens.

Haven't touched a soda with calories in decades. One of the best changes for my health I've done over the years.

Refined sugar isn't all that natural and good for you either. It's a 140 calorie soda. It's not going to be good for you regardless of sweetener.

He needs to address the root cause of why everyone switched to HFCS. The US sugar policy goes to extremes to protect our domestic sugar industry, and it really hasn't worked to save the industry anyway, due to the creation of alternative sweeteners like HFCS.

Ain't nothin' finer than a ice cold coke or Dublin with real sugar on a hot summer day. Like I tell my wife, if cutting out sweets and sugars means I die a few years early, so be it. I would rather enjoy a shorter life than be miserable with a longer one.

The thing is, your body acclimates pretty fast once you give up added sugar in most of what you consume. Stuff just becomes cloyingly sweet.

After my dad had a heart attack, I and my brothers were over at their place. My mom started *****in at us about our dietary habits, going on about salads and such. After 10 mins or so, I told her I'm not going to eat crap I don't like so I can live longer to eat more of the crap I don't like. My genetics laughed at me and I had my first heart attack 11 years later at the ripe old age of 37.

I agree, since I love Coke. But I gave it up on Dec 31, 2023 cold turkey. It was supposed to be for 1 month then I just extended it. Like Trump's tariffs.

Fake news. Coke didn't agree to anything. Also, there really is no difference in how your body metabolizes real sugar or high fructose corn syrup - both are broken down into roughly 50/50 fructose and glucose and have the same impact on your body. Anyone that says otherwise probably also buys global warming bs; that said, too much sugar is bad for you regardless of form. But life is about moderation. Having some isn't going to kill you either

Interesting. My gout doctor recently said that new studies show without a doubt high fructose corn syrup is worse for you than real sugar. Should I trust them or you

DannyDuberstein
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Same amount of calories. Both metabolize the same way and break down into approx 50/50 fructose and glucose. Feel free to look this up; widely available. Your doc is selling junk science. Yes, fructose can cause gout issues, but they both end up about the same amount of fructose. Just because one doesn't have fructose in the name doesn't make it better

If your gout doc wanted to do you a favor, he should be telling you to make sure you consume less of both vs having you think it's more acceptable to down real sugar.

I haven't had a sweetened soda, other than the occasional ginger ale for an upset stomach, since at least 2018. That includes the coke or two a day that I downed. On (football) game day, it was more like 5-6. Since, I've been drinking mostly seltzer water -- flavored soda without sugar. For some it is an acquired taste. For me, it was good almost from the start.

About 2 years ago, I wanted to see what a coke tasted like after a 5 year absence. I still have several cans of soda in my fridge from the last time we took drinks to a party (we do that somewhat often). I opened it up, took a couple of sips and was like, "no, not interested." This is from a lifetime coke drinker who often judged restaurants by the quality of their coca-cola (honestly, I could taste the difference, even at fast food places; Wendys, at least at one time, had the best of all FF restaurants). Anyway, while I used to have the occasional craving, I now don't. I see a coke and think, "I don't want that; I'll grab my seltzer water."

So "miserable" is a bit of hyperbole. Trust me: if I can go cold turkey on cokes, ANYONE can.

It's amazing how much weight you can lose just cutting out sugar sodas I lost 30 lbs a few years ago and have kept it off. I occasionally have a zero-sugar one with a meal but I drink mostly water and 2 % milk.

I thought HFCS was bad for your liver.

Liver and HFCS
DannyDuberstein
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Fructose can be, but real sugar = sucrose which is comprised of 1 molecule of glucose and 1 molecule of fructose. From that article:

So again, you're getting approx the same fructose regardless and should be moderating consumption of both. Drinking real sugar soda vs hfcs soda isn't magically saving anyone from fructose consumption
agent-maroon
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Much of the danger in consuming refined glucose containing products lies in the rate they are metabolized and handled by the liver's capacity to further metabolize them. Naturally occurring glucose (carbs) are in the form of starches which have a chemical structure that has to be broken down, which takes time. Refined sugars are straight up glucose/fructose that gets dumped into the bloodstream and circulated until the liver can deal with the resulting glucose bolus. The liver is overwhelmed and the result is essentially Type 2 diabetes.

Pure cane sugar might have a slight nutritional advantage over HFCS, but it's like saying that a knife assault is better than being shot. Neither is good.

At HEB, try the "20 Calorie" sodas…a balance of best (or worst) of both worlds (regular sugar and a sweetener).

5 carbs a can vs 30. I have never been able to do diet, but most flavors are good.

Yes, being overweight is a big problem in America. Look at pictures from the 70s and look at people now. Almost no woman cooks at home anymore. Throwing processed food packages in the microwave isn't cooking. Full of oil, sugar and salt which leads to various diseases as we grow older. Pill popping is a part of life in this country. I have managed to stay away from all of that, I am not on any medication and rarely get sick. Muscle mass decrease is an issue in our later years so I started weights again.

We have to do it NOW in order to have the best possible senior years.

(I am no expert on this, but my wife is big on this so I am regurgitating whatever she says)

"Real" is always better than artificial. That said, it is best to reduce sugar as much as possible. I LOVE SUGAR. But I am trying to my best to cut down. We cannot avoid sugar in today's world but we can make a dent in our intake.

Back in the A&M days, I never drank water, I used to drink A+ Cola. Every day. Very unhealthy but being young helps.
