The Chinese are like the Terminator.

They can't be bargained with. They can't be reasoned with. They don't feel pity, or remorse. And they absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are defeated.

There should be nothing that is essential to the industrial supply chain that is coming from China.

Agreed. Now tell that to the CEOs of every company that wanted cheap costs thanks to cheap labor and other things. I mean, how else were they going to get their shareholders happy, and thereby get themselves an ever higher salary, if not for having their goods manufactured overseas.

And hopefully this is just another catalyst for us to fix that.

SHOULD has nothing to do with the current situation There is stuff we need from foreign
Countries that keep our economy moving.

Before declaring a multi front trade war we might should have had a strategy other than try to make the ENTIRE rest of the world blink

Unwinding from China has been occurring for years before these tariffs, but yes, going after the planet on this was a bit much.

What were we importing from the Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact during the cold war? NOTHING - or at least nothing important.

Why? Because they were our ADVERSARIES...you don't make your economy dependent upon them.

China is an adversary....there should be NOTHING that we NEED that has to come from them.

Period. Full stop.

Cheap ****ty toys and crap - fine, get it from China.

Important ***** Don't pick your enemy as your sole source.

But, glad you could get your dig in at Trump - bravo for staying on that track...

I agree. Maybe a multi front war wasn't wise here. Hopefully we pivot and concentrate on just killing China.

All for a fistful of dollars, we sold our our values. We even fund dictatorships and terrorists and commies abroad to make a buck.

You don't seem to understand 17's post. He's saying that if we need to decouple from China as fast as possible, then simultaneously picking economic/trade fights with every other country on earth impedes our ability to do so.

If it's 10pm and you're going to bed, you can't sleep for 10 hours to catch up on sleep and wake up at 5am to get an early start on your day. You have to prioritize and make a choice. Trump's choices seem like he's trying to do both (or in his case, pursue way more than just two conflicting policies).

Started under Trump 45, continued under Biden, and now continues under Trump 47.

What little credit I give Biden is that he largely continued Trump's policies to unwind from China. He could have reversed everything that was started and he didn't. However, I'm still quite sure he did some things with and for China that were/are not in our favor that we don't know about yet.

This also doesn't change the fact that a future Democrat POTUS or Congress may still try to reverse everything that has been started.

If you just hit China, companies will just go around them through proxies like Singapore to get the same Chines goods. Hitting everyone is the only to guarantee a true decoupling.

Look at NVDA. China wasn't supposed to get any chips. But they did. NVDA was using a shell in Singapore, and it was a massive portion of their revenues.

How do US tariffs on foreign goods prevent an American company from selling to a foreign country? Tariffs are assessed when a good enters the US, not when one leaves.

Good point. Related example: when Germany halted trade with Russia as punishment for Ukraine War they simply transferred trade spend to a Russian satellite country and continued same trade as before.

One big balloon squeeze exercise.

My analogy is that of a man (USA) who goes to the gym and works out but wants to get shredded like the pro body builders are. He can't put in the work so he goes on steroids (Cheap Chinese goods). He begins to look like those pro body builders and is happy now (Costs low, more profits).

But his long term health suffers (job losses, poor quality products, American towns decimated) and he realizes he has to stop steroids (cheap Chinese goods). There will be withdrawals (stock market volatility, CEOs unhappy, some sectors going out of business, higher prices to the consumer) and he will not look as ripped (higher product costs) but eventually his health will be better for the long term (more employment, products priced correctly within the American ecosystem).

Isn't that kind of their job? Aren't they supposed to maximize profit and shareholder value? If it's a strategic liability, isn't that the government's job to address through policy to incentivize American markets?

Fair enough.

But, I was taking umbrage with his point that we NEED to get things from other countries...at least don't use an enemy for that.

Sorry to offend you but if we need rare earth minerals better have several sources

Companies like Toyota Kubota and BMW all assemble equipment in the us with a mixture of domestically and international sourced components

Trump forces a renegotiation of NAFTA and signed the new deal in his first term and less then 6 years later he is threatening our neighbors

Trump has decided that everyone except the perro dictators are our enemy
Trumps first term economic policy was reasonable and showed a proper balance of restraint and brinkmanship Currently policy
Not so much

Agree with his strategy or not, but this is what Trump is trying to fix. He should get credit for at least being aware of the problem, acknowledging it, and forcing us to resolve it, unlike any of his predecessors.

Great theory….where do we get titanium, silver, other rare earth minerals from? We CHOOSE to make certain things elsewhere…some raw materials don't provide us with that choice.

So who does China plan to sell those products to? I'm guessing we can find or create a new source much faster than they can find a new buyer. Point? This decoupling is going to suck for us but it's the beginning of the end for China. There is no other market with sufficient demand for the stuff they sell us which makes this move by them puzzling. A rational actor would find a way to keep their critical customer happy. Unfortunately China isn't rational and here we are.
AtticusMatlock

This isn't just about the US corporations. It's about China being very dirty and willing to pollute and kill their own population to support dominating key sectors in the supply chain. Those rare earth metals everyone talks about are not all that rare. It is a misnomer. We have many of them in abundance here.

What's rare is the willingness to do what it takes to extract them from the rock they are suspended in at low enough cost. The process is dirty. China is willing to do it and supplement the industries to make sure no one else can compete.

The second we start trying to process our own bauxite into aluminum, our own rare earths, or even mine our own metals (which we absolutely have here), all of these green groups (some of whom are backdoor funded and sponsored by China) will file suits and those projects will be in legal limbo for years and years and years. The regulations on processing would make those companies produce at such high cost that it would be almost impossible to turn a profit.
