31 states where drivers face 'touch law' fines up to $450 if hands are in the wrong place and it applies at red lights
These so-called touch laws across the US prohibit drivers from holding or using electronic devices for activities like talking, texting, or browsing.
Indeed, even holding a device in a visible or conspicuous manner can result in a hefty penalty, as the rules apply regardless of whether the vehicle is moving or stationary due to traffic or a traffic signal.
The states are
- Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia
Personally I use "hands free" mode for my cell phone, but I am not a contractor, delivery or uber driver. I have mixed feeling about these "no touch" laws, but it is good to know what states have them.
