I regret that I only have but one blue star to give. These people have no shame and absolute zero self-awareness.ProgN said:Reminds me of someone that supported masks, social distancing, closing of schools and commerce, and firing people that refused to inject a bull**** jab mislabeled as a vaccine. May, 2024. The hyenas on The View fantasize about which prison Trump might end up in. Whoopi suggests reopening Alcatraz and imprisoning Trump there.

Almost Whoopi. Your President does want to reopen Alcatraz. pic.twitter.com/RovkZ6fKUv

Not sure if the most shocking thing is that Trump gets his ideas from movies on TV or that he watches PBS...Quote:
Trump was in Mar-a-Lago at the time; The Independent, an online British newspaper, reported, "WLRN 26 Miami's local PBS affiliate broadcasted Escape from Alcatraz on Saturday at 9 p.m. ET. The movie, which stars Clint Eastwood, was re-aired the following morning at 11 a.m."
$50M to improve it as a museum. It would take billions to get it up to speed as a maximum security prison.flown-the-coop said:Congress already approved $50MM before Trump was even elected.Anonymous Source said:ds00 said:More expensive Alcatraz renovation or the military parade on Trump's Birthday?zag213004 said:ABATTBQ11 said:

I think you keep it open as both a prison and a tourist site. Put in some viewing platforms and let the public come take a gander at our most vile criminals.
And for Trump's birthday parade, it will be good to finally see the military march in a parade that is not BLM or LGBTQI++ focused for a change.
Billions huh. How did you arrive at that estimate? Are we putting a fleet of nuclear subs to guard the place?Anonymous Source said:$50M to improve it as a museum. ADX Florence cost $60MM.
And yes, I understand the $50MM was for the museum part. Also, you may detect a hint of facetiousness in my response above though I think it would be humorous to put the inmates on display for tourists - including opportunities to harrass and humiliate the prisoners.
There is simply no good reason (beyond Trump thinking it would be neat-o) to spend the hundreds of millions it would take to get Alcatraz to being a functioning maximum security prison, not to mention the additional tens of millions annually to maintain the place. It would be much smarter (and MUCH cheaper) to simply increase capacity at existing federal prisons. But even then the Bureau of Prisons currently has excess capacity as it is, so this is a solution in desperate search of a problem.Quote:
Alcatraz was shut down more than six decades ago because it cost too much to run the place (three times what it cost to run other federal prisons). Alcatraz was designated a National Historical Landmark in 1986 and is now run by the National Park Service.
To make the prison operable would require a massive amount of money; there's no access to outside power lines or clean water on the island, facilities have deteriorated from time and saltwater damage, and weather conditions around the island make large-scale renovations difficult.
Alcatraz is already undergoing a $50 million renovation to refurbish the main prison building. Renovation plans include "abatement of hazardous materials in the exterior walls and interior construction areas, repair of concrete spalls, replacement of deteriorated steel reinforcement, strengthening of unreinforced concrete foundation walls, repair and stabilization of exterior windows, and installation of storm windows," according to Tutor Perini, the construction company overseeing the project. Renovations will be complete in 2027. It would take years to turn Alcatraz into a functional federal penitentiary (and large-scale renovations would eat up the millions of dollars in tourist revenue the island generates each year), and California Democrats would likely delay the process in courts.

Guess what was on TV in South Florida on Saturday night?

The 1979 Clint Eastwood film "Escape from Alcatraz."

Not one. You know why? Because they all know its an idiotic idea lol
