In my day "restorative discipline" was administered at the business end of a wooden paddle.

My wife's middle school does something similar "restorative discipline" although I don't recall that term being specifically used. Her idiot principal created the "reset room" where the cretin is sent to "reflect" on their actions before being returned to the classroom.

As I have said so many times before, the single biggest problem (and there are many) in public schools is not kicking out the habitual offenders. Get them out.

Often capitulating to the same parents who are to blame for the offender's behavior.

What were the bully's parents doing to help their child? Was the bully a part of a 1 or 2 parent home?

My restorative discipline is when they've learned their lesson by the time feeling is restored to their backside.

There used to be a kind of boarding school for troubled teens in west Texas called The High Frontier. They would take kids that schools and parents could not handle. They slept in cabins and their shoes were locked up each night. They had class and then job around the camp including working with the horse program.

My dad taught there for a few years. Some kids they could help, some tried running away or hitch hiking through the Davis Mountains, some got sent to juvenile detention.

Sounds like the bully might have needed some time at a place like that instead of being let back into a school where their actions were unchecked. Such a sad situation all the way around.

Generic word salad tatamount to throwing dirt on the deceased kid's grave. I don't see why this administrator is still employed by the district. It's like the thinking is, this is one bully that won't be causing problems for the administrators. Obviosly their methods of handling the problem Failed miserably.

Been a while, but I read it here on F16. Some SJW was defending bad behavior and claimed that knife fights were cultural & it was racist to think otherwise. A ridiculous claim then and total sarcasm on my part now.

You wouldn't even believe the left wing claptrap ideology at work at an elementary school as well. It's comical.

Saw on KWTX the clown superintendent for Killeen isd was out of state at a conference, and had to fly back last night and issue a statement on video to reassure parents their schools are safe.

1. Your schools aren't safe
2. You create the environment
3. Very few women should be secondary administrators

Before leaving education I was an assistant principal at a high school. Admins and specifically female admins create the worst environments for campuses. I'll get blasted for that but I've seen enough of it.

would Texas schools be run differently if the Department of Education was eliminated and all the funding and legal requirements devolved back to the State House?

FWIW - don't jump on the "it's the bully's fault" band wagon too fast.

There was a shooting a few years back in our ISD that was "oh he defended himself from the bully" and then it turns out he had a beef with his dealer instead.

Playing the bully card is a favorite nowadays to justify assault.

In a district that size, there's no telling who made the final decision for her to be sent back but chances are whoever it was, is a district admin.

There are several people who should lose their jobs from this but I'm guessing there might be one person scapegoated and that'll be about it.

Women and men are generally wired differently.

Women want inclusitivity and acceptance.
Men want rules and boundaries with punishment.

They both are good in the right circumstances, but you need both.

And the kisd school board is having an emergency school board meeting now to spew the same old garbage lines of your kids are safe. If you've got to say it and keep repeating it, they aren't.

My experience with 2 boys in suburban area:
Soft female administrators in schools,
Female Elementary = no more recess tag, football, basketball games and only inclusive activities allowed…. So boys spend the time just walking around

Female Middle School = Boy Scouts banned, no shop class, everyone in a homeEc class

HS= male principal law and order, and year round sports kept them from trouble

I spent many hours in principal office grades 1-8 complaining. They heard me out but "knew better" than to listen to my advice

When I broke into administration from coaching,it was the new "principal is your curricular leader" rather than a manager. Manager was now a bad word. I had been around too long to not know that deep down, most teachers wanted strict, swift discipline before curriculum leader. I refused to change and it cost me some jobs. I would be the choice of the teacher committee, but not the hens who sat around and dreamed up sheet for teachers to try, or who were constantly on the road to Austin.
Thank goodness for my old Profs in Masters program at SFA-- they had all been administrators, not the 28 year old boy wonder with a PHD. We would study the ins and outs of school, and focused on discipline problems they and rest of us had seen. ( Then SFA started PHD program and hired profs from up north, and program went to crap.)
We could fix the mess in schools without spending an extra dime.

But school is a political football.

LOL-- Integrate schools! Yes! Then tell black kids they cant learn! No!
Tell Hispanic kids they cant learn English without this or that.
Attendance bad-- Punish kids for absences. But then offer them Saturday school as a way out.
Failing grades, you cant play ball for six weeks. No pass , no play. So we get athletes in and ruin SPED.
Now, no pass, who cares, and colleges accept them?
Bad, consistent discipline? Send them to AEP. Only after hearings, now no loss of credit-- AEP is vacation for lots of them. Expel a kid? Judge will put him back in school.
All these hypocrisies come from AUSTIN!

I googled, "does Killeen Isd use Restorative discipilne"? Yes, they do.
I googled restorative discipline. As defined," It allows students to reflect upon and grow from errors in judgement and conflicts without being sent out of classroom. It is repair process, and kids evaluate harm done."
Literally right now, the KISD school board is in a meeting about "DAEP re-imagined." Coincidentally, considering yesterday's death.

The presentation is by Susan Buckley. Susan Buckley is the wife of State Rep. Brad Buckley, the RINO who is in Dade Phelan's gang and who co-authored the school choice bill being debated currently in the Texas House.

These are not serious people.

During Tuesday's workshop meeting, Killeen ISD trustees discussed a proposal from a committee led by Susan Buckley, assistant superintendent for Administrative Services, titled DAEP Re-Imagined.

The Disciplinary Alternative Education Program known as DAEP is defined by the Texas Education Association as an action group and pertains to all actions for students being placed or expelled to an on-campus or an off-campus program for the current year or for a continuation from the prior year.
Killeen ISD defines it as a placement for students who have violated certain provisions of the Student Code of Conduct.

To introduce the presentation, Buckley explained that the mission of the Re-Imagined DAEP was to transform the current program by focusing on social-emotional learning or SEL and create a supportive environment for students.

"The goal of this committee is to transform the DAEP program by focusing on the social and emotional learning of SEL and creating a supportive environment for students to focus on the root cause of their behavior and why they are there," Buckley said.

The new plan has five key components, including SEL support, "Capturing Kids Hearts" activities, "Mindful Moments" daily lessons, individualized group lessons and individualized exit transition plans.

Characterizing this new initiative, Buckley said, "this emphasizes that DAEP is not a pipeline to prison, but a pipeline to potential that will empower students to thrive academically and personally.
"By focusing on holistic development, we aim to create a brighter future for all DAEP students," Buckley said. "We're trying to make it more of a therapeutic learning wraparound service."

It illustrates exactly how a student could get killed after being placed back in a school. And they went ahead with the meeting anyway.

Wow. And bet they had a catered lunch.
Ya know, some students think of kindness as a weakness and will take advantage of the good graces of well meaning folks. Human nature. And liberals dont understand it, and just like this BS above, they throw money at it and of course politicians make hay out of it, power and grift wise.

Root cause to their poor behavior is no teaching from home, never darkened door of church, no consequences at school.
Consequences are result of poor choices, you DO learn from them.
And these kind of kids can have parents worth millions, no color or economic conditions is indicator of poor parenting.
LOL, had a black momma come to school because her son wouldnt pull his "britches" up and wanted the sag. She went in hall during class change and got in his ear all the way down the hall. He never sagged again.

What I've never understood relative to these situations...WHY do today's kids resort to murder as a solution?? Yes...I'm and 'old'...graduated HS in '64 but as best I can remember, we NEVER even considered murder of another student or teacher. Fist fight among the guys and afterwards it was over. Winner was perhaps congratulated and the loser consoled. Didn't happen between them again because everyone knew the probable outcome beforehand. We all knew the serious consequences AND they would be administered in short order.

How the hell did we arrive at this situation in our schools??? WHAT is wrong with people???
Because we took away the ability for young men to be young men. We try to act like we are different from animals in the wild, but we display a lot of the same characteristics. For women we sat them in front of a screen and destroyed any semblance of normal behavior while absolutely destroying their developmental stages. Sprinkle in the feminist movement and here we are.
