I wonder how many actual Asians are commenting on this thread vs people who are making judgments about Asians without knowing much more than they have a friend who's Asian…..they're not balanced or happy because they don't play sports and get pushed by their parents to succeed. They're socially awkward, etc etc.

Take a look at society especially in this country and look at the races, cultures and attitudes that are causing all the issues.

Do you know why cops don't shoot Asians in traffic stops? Because Asians don't commit violent crime. Therefore, cops aren't on edge when they pull them over. Regardless of how you want to racially stereotype Asians, they're a very successful group in this country and the world because by and large they're respectful, law abiding, mind their own business, believe in family, education and working hard….oh, and they're also very smart as a collective group.

I know a couple here posting are Asian.

The rest don't know about the Asian culture. They stereotype because the Crackers are white and in their little worlds

  • F = Find a new family

We are white, but people jokingly say we parent like Asians. Our boys compete in math olympics and TAPPS academic team events, play in a chess league, etc. They get most of their white friends from playing sports, but otherwise they tend to hang with Asian kids.

When I was in the Rice MBA program back in the 90's, we had constant group projects. I always rounded up a team of Indian and Chinese students. I had them do all the math and I wrote the papers explaining the results in understandable English. I also tended to be the one who did the oral presentations. Win-win.

The stereotypes contain a lot of truth.

The posters who are getting defensive on this generally light hearted thread can take comfort in one thing. I watched a video of the annual calculus competition at MIT (the 2023 "integration bee"). The room was mostly Asians but with a sizeable white minority. The champion (the Grand Integrator) was a white dude. He out-nerded a whole room of Asian math prodigies!

I'm at the Texas Chess Championship Tournament and it's very lopsided. My kids are in elementary so they are competing in lower grade level (elementary) sections. It might be different in middle school and high school sections, but I doubt it. The difference is more profound at the higher levels. I have one kid competing in the "championship" section (no cap on their rating) and he is the only non Asian. These are the absolute best players in the state in their respective grades. My students competing in the "JV" section (lowest cap in rating) has the highest % of non Asian (maybe 30% at best).

Very anecdotal, but the hotel I'm staying at is also hosting some baseball teams for some sort of baseball tournament. Yep, you can guess what those kids look like.

Back when I was working on my graduate degrees, my side hustle was test prep.
SAT
PSAT
GRE
GMAT
LSAT
MCAT
Miller' Analogies...

Made really good bank. Taught at several universities, and at several school districts.

One of the most fun classes was my "chinese" class (at Chinese school). Saturdays was a 6th day of school for these kids, they rented public schools for the day, and from 5th or 6th grade many were enrolled in my SAT classes. I had several 7th graders that (after my class, of course) able to come within a question or 2 of making 800s on the math and mid 700's on verbal.

They were bright, perhaps they did have a genetic leg up on other races, but the parental involvement was off the charts an I think that was the key difference.

As an aside, most of my Grad School Engineering classes at A&M (Zachry) were all Asian(Chinese + Indian) with a smattering of white males, no white females, and no blacks at all, no hispanic. This was 25 years ago.

All the Asians in my neighborhood hire a contractor to do basic home maintenance like installing a ceiling fan or changing a sprinkler head. They also ask for help if they find a snake in their yard. They could probably beat YT at chess but that's about it.

No offense, but time is limited in this world and everyone gets 24 hrs a day.
While you spend your time installing water heaters and sump pumps, Steve Chang spends it learning Generative AI and builds an AI company and makes millions.

I'd rather be Steve Chang.

Just like America outsources the low level manual labor jobs to Mexico and Philippines, Steve Chang has outsourced the labor jobs to people like yourself. Please think about this deeply. Our kids futures are at stake.

PS: I absolutely love fixing things and I appreciate those who can install a fan (I can) or any electrical or do construction. I wish I had skills to do internal house renovations but I don't. But there isn't enough time in the world these days. We have to sacrifice some things. We aren't in the 50s anymore.

That is what I notice too. White people in MS/PhD are outstanding. Top of the line. The asians are the middle tier but have sheer numbers. White people were just a few.

You need both for America though.

You cannot win a NC with two 5-star players. You need to have 25 4-star players instead.

About 25 years ago I played Starcraft competitively (for those that don't know, this was the crowning achievement of real time strategy games in the late 90s/early 2000s).

I was not bad...... but it was well known that Koreans and Chinese were absolutely dominant at that game.

To this day.... the best Starcraft and Starcraft II players in the world are overwhelmingly Korean and Chinese.

You should, because it does! Maybe not piano exclusively (I'd probably argue most instruments) but I think there are studies that link increased intelligence with serious music study. I don't have them handy, but I have seen some, so you'll have to either take my word for it or not.

I'm not a chess player so I can't comment on that, but music teaches so many different things: the ability to concentrate in order to learn, the awareness that practice is key to learning and mastering most anything, and the ability to learn to perform and ATTEMPT to get it right the first time. All this with something we ostensibly love to do -- at least for those that like music.

Is it going to raise their SAT score 200 points? Probably not, but if it teaches them discipline and study habits from their practice routine, all that combined likely will raise it some.

very important skills in engineering

You know what also teaches you this? Jiu Jitsu, wrestling and even boxing to a degree. And you get the benefit of not having to worry about your kids getting picked on.

Anything that fires your brain off in different unusual ways will make you smarter. Music is the perfect example, but another good one is learning a foreign language. ESPECIALLY an Asian language (or Nordic), if you can brave it. That way you're learning how to not only speak a new language but read and write new characters.

Balance should be stressed in a high achievement household.

You look at Japan now and they're embracing lying flat. Their birthrate is at all time lows.

China's is at an all time low as well.

The exam in Singapore they all stress about to get into the best, most prestigious school there is creates quite a stir.

There needs to be balance.
I think you are thinking of Chyna. " Lying flat " and " Let it rot " are Chinese movements amongst youth.
Unless Japanese youth are doing the same thing, if they are it is probably under a different name. Birthrate is dropping like a rock in Japan, Korea and Chyna. Chinese pop. is probably 900 million at most and not 1.4 billion.

Funny you mention that. I have my kids in a Jiu jitsu based martial arts program. They are both small for their age and I don't think that will ever change. I blame their parents - 5', 100 lbs and 5'7" 160 lbs. so I went with something that can do a lot with little.

Proud dad moment: got a call from the principal because she got into a "fight" with two boys. Apparently she busted one's nose and subdued the other until he started crying because they were bullying her friend during recess. "No" didn't work and there weren't any teachers around.
