Other than tax evasion and statutory rape, what is President Trump planning to pardon him for? There's no basis for a pardon for breaking league rules… that's not even a thing.
Maybe it's more along the moral/ethical behavior, a la HR type stuff most employees have hanging over their head at work?

So he's issuing an empty pardon because of feels?

Pete Rose agreed to his punishment of a lifetime ban in exchange for the investigation into his gambling being stopped in its tracks.

His ban is now over.

I'm a 2-time Trump voter but this declaration is another example of his ability to take the public's eye off the ball at the most inopportune times. With all the issues that Trump and his government have going on in the first 100 days, this is the sort of distraction that will just divert attention from the really pressing needs of the nation. Of all the problems in America, the Pete Rose/HOF issue surely ranks near, or at, the bottom of the list of what should be occupying the time and attention of the.POTUS.

People actually care who is in the Hall of Fame, or not?

Unless a thread like this pops up, the Hall of Fame never crosses my mind - for any sport.

Yes.

Beats the hell out of Biden's pardons because of covering up corruption and crime

It's a bathroom tweet. But you keep on going complaining and giving up.

My uncle, who's a few years younger than Trump, posts the same type of messages on Facebook, so it's not out of the realm of possibility.

What does President Biden have to do with the OP? You only feel the need to derail because you know the whole idea of a pardon for breaking league rules is absurdly stupid.

The right answer was always to let Pete into the Hall because of his accomplishments on the field, but ban him from participating in MLB in any capacity as a coach, manager, or in the front office…

THAT is how it should have been handled…

He's not getting a pardon for "breaking league rules". Absurdly stupid to suggest that's what the pardon is for.

The reason for this pardon, and for the Biden, pardons, and for any pardon is relevant. It shows the president can do it for any reason he wants. Whether it's for "feels" or to coverup his and his family's crimes.

Which do you think is preferable?

It's crazy how intelligent people don't understand the Rose betting scenario.

If he bet the same amount on his team to win every night, that is one thing.

He was manipulating the games. He was controlling the allocation of the team's assets/pitchers and bet big some nights and $0 on other nights....including using inside information.

He certainly does not belong in the HOF....but I am surprised he has not been put in.

It is a joke that Bonds is not in. Clearly one of the top 3 players to ever play. They don't know who took what drugs when. The now scrawny Jeff Bagwell says "What Up?"

THAT isn't what Pete agreed to in exchange for the investigation to stop. Permanent ban. Not lifetime.

I don't care if he gets in now, by the way. Mention the ban on his plaque

So you just have to break the rules that you don't agree with to get the HOF invite?

He's transgressions had ZERO to do with what he did as a player…

It was excessive, and anyone with a rational brain knows it…

He didn't throw the World Series…he beat Cobb's record with what he did on the field…

The field player should be enshrined…

I was a big Pete rose fan as a kid, he always denied everything. When he finally told the truth... I didn't feel sorry for him anymore... I don't really care one way or another anymore, and don't think Trump should be involved in this.
BMX Bandit
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Whether it was excessive or not does not change it's what Rose agreed to in order to stop the investigation.

First he said he never bet on baseball.

Then he said he only bet on other teams.

Then he said he only bet on his team to win.

Any rational person knows the man was a liar.

Agree with the thread. Sports don't need the government's help. As a conservative, I believe in small government, and that means keeping politics out of sports, especially at the federal level. MLB, the NFL, the NCAA these organizations have managed their own business for over a century, rising and falling based on merit and market forces, not government interference. The federal government stepping in to make pronouncements about the Hall of Fame or trying to police sports decisions is exactly the kind of mission creep conservatives should reject.

Pete Rose's case is a debate for baseball, not for the President. If people want to pressure the Hall of Fame to reconsider, they should do so as fans, not as part of a political crusade. Let sports be sports. The free market has already spoken baseball is doing just fine without government interference. If conservatives believe in limiting government, then that means keeping it out of entertainment, too.

Dumb. Rose admitted to it.

If he really wants to call out MLB, ne needs to call them and Manfred for protecting the Yankees and Dodgers.

Put Pete Rose in HOF. His image was tarnished by his off the field actions and he paid for his mistakes. The Hall is for on the field performance.

If he bet on his teams games as a manager he affected the results of games.

Shaving points is a thing and a tweak to the lineup or knowing who is hurt and who is off their game affects your teams odds of winning...which would allow him to not bet when his team was at a disadvantage.

He had inside info and used it to gamble.

As has been pointed out, he accepted the ban to stop the investigation. Very shady.

And because he stopped the investigation he was able to throughout the rest of his life make claims as to his innocence and the extent of the betting that noone could dispute with facts. And he did use this to his advantage and to constantly obscure the truth and try to change public perception to his advantage.

Which shows he learned nothing and was still more concerned about his ego than the truth or integrity of the game which by itself should keep him out.

He showed absolutely no remorse because if he had then he would have come clean about everything.

TBH I don't think he ever really been came completely clean.

Let's not give ol' Marge Schott a pass here. She was just as instrumental in orchestrating Pete's lifetime ban. F that B!

MLB is dying. It's a far cry from what it used to be. You need an interpreter to decipher player interviews.

You can put Pete rose in the hall of fame and qualify it by virtue of explaining his gambling issues.

Paul hornung had to sit out a year because of his gambling in the nfl, in the 60's. He was reinstated the next year and finished his career.

Don't think I've heard that story.

How did she orchestrate getting Pete Rose to agree to a permanent ban? Was she the bookie?
