Wait.. Did Biden close the WH to tours? Was this something leftover from Covid?

Now they don't have to worry about visitors seeing the President sleeping.

Or Chinese officials walking around. Or Iranians.

No. In fact, Biden expanded the tours to include rooms that were previously not accessible. Tours are normally suspended during the transitionary period because it is common for a lot of work to be done in the building.

I can't imagine how many skid marks they have had to clean up over the last 3 weeks.

Thanks RTT!

I couldn't have imagined them being closed since Covid and not getting a roaring outcry. Makes sense to suspend them during the transition though, if only for logistical reasons.

I can personally verify that tours were open during the Biden presidency. My family enjoyed the tour.

The Covid pause on tours ended in 2022.

To be fair, FLOTUS did not blame the previous administration or claim it had never been open. I guess she could have made it clear that the closure was transition related.

Silly of her to assume people would know what's going on and not immediately jump to partisan conclusions

Interesting. Was it because he wasn't using the rooms anymore or they had been sealed for a while and he took the trouble to have them cleaned and restored?

I had actually reserved a tour of the Capitol for next weekend because the White House was not accepting

just went to my @#$#@ leftist congresswoman Delaney in Maryland and filled out the form.

I am sure they will screw it up!!

I visited the Bush White House when I had a buddy who was a Colonel in the Marine Corps. it was awesome!

It was spaces that had not historically been accessible going back a long time. For the most part, it was rooms on the ground floor that were open, but roped off at the doorway. Visitors can now go inside those rooms to look around. They also opened the Diplomatic Reception Room that has always been closed off.

Thanks. and Yes, the Diplomatic Reception Room. Didn't see that when toured in the early 90's.

FYI - THIS is the tour you want to go on:
https://whitehouse.gov1.info/visit/white-house-garden-tour.html

This tour allows you to walk right up to Oval Office and look in the windows, then walk along the colonnade into the Residence.

Except my Iranian wife. She's probably already called Cruz to request a tour.

Not too many were lying around. At least not for long. Hunter has never been known for his moderation.

Good for her. I am guessing she hasn't been getting money under the table like the Iranians in power.

I went on the Fall tour back in 1991 during the Bush Sr. administration and it was fantastic. Got to go around the grounds in front of the White House and see all the trees planted by the different presidents going back to John Quincy Adams. Got to see the playground and gardens, then into the bottom floor of the White House and see pretty much everything on the 1st floor. I took a morning tour and liked it so much that I signed up again and went a second time in the afternoon.

On the afternoon tour, we were completing our outdoor loop and were getting close to the White House when secret service came out and stopped the line and put the landing targets out on the lawn. A few minutes later Marine One and another helicopter landed on the lawn and Bush got out and headed inside. There were a group of celbrities standing outside to greet him. I remember seeing Jim Brown and Carly Simon in the group. Anyway, after they all went in and up to the residence, or West Wing, we were allowed to continue the tour and go inside and finish the tour. I remember the blue room, the East Room where they have the parties for the heads of state, and the famous portraits of past presidents, the beatiful stairway to the residence. It was a fantastic experience from a different era. I wish it could still be that informal and open to the public. The history is so thick there that it's hard to take it all in.

You should get The White House: History of an American Idea by William Seale. It's a great book, especially if you've been inside the White House. There so much more history of the structure itself that most people never learn, and you will never look at the building the same way after you read the book.

During the Truman administration, they gutted it to the walls and rebuilt it. When people refer to the Lincoln bedroom, I always wonder if it really is Lincoln's old office or whatever. When you rip it all out and build back in the same place, it doesn't quite seem correct to me.

Even if they removed and stored all the old walls and floors, and put them back, is it the same room?

My wife and I were on a tour the first day they opened it back up in 2017. We did not realize it was the first day they had reopened, it was just the day that had worked for our schedule.

Trump came down the hall right as we entered the center hall to greet the tour goers and take pictures with some of the kids in the crowd. Random timing.

Some of this is covered in the book. They saved a lot from the original structure, but the flooring was completely replaced. All the mantles and carved stone work was saved, as was a lot of the original wood work from the walls. The floor plan is almost identical to what existed prior to the renovation, except for the new staircase in the main foyer and the Chief Usher's office mezzanine. The Lincoln bedroom is actually what was Lincoln's office.
