Stolen identity absolutely ruined my wife's credit for years as she was coming out of school. It was amazing how little there was we could do about it at the time. Incredibly frustrating. Turned out to be some POS lady with Mexican name...probably illegal.

Model citizen with advanced degrees and high paying job coming out of school, and only debt was student loans...with a credit score in the 200-300's if I remember correctly.

A restaurant in Bryan was one of my bookkeeping clients. The office manager showed me a letter they had received from a lawyer in Chicago. A picture of the lawyer's client was enclosed with a request to verify he had never been an employee of theirs. His SS# was noted. The office manager also showed me a current paychecks to an employee with the same name and SS#. I suggested she call immigration and let them hand out the paychecks.

This one deserves its own thread. This is another huge one. Tens of millions do this now. If you shut this down then you effectively end their ability to work any job that isn't being paid under the table. They will self deport once they start going after businesses and people for this.

I think that part of the problem is that SSNs are simply too short. There are only a billion possible 9-digit sequences, and the current US population is about 1/3 of that. So the odds are good that a "fake" SSN made up on the spot actually belongs to someone.

If SSNs were 12 or more digits, it would be less of an issue.

I'm sure they are going to find my dad's social being used. I had to finish paying off a dental bill for him and when his number was pulled up it was being used by a Hispanic. He was already gone so I just let it go. I think that person is paying his taxes and SS too.

I am sure we have easily spent over a TRILLION dollars on illegals in the last few decades. Then you have all the money we have spent on the anchor babies. I think they are generally aware of this issue and track both legitimate and probably fraudulent w2 submissions separately. It is my understanding there is some legal precedent for the fraudulently filed w2 to be set aside for the earner who did the work, even though it was unlawful and involved identity fraud, because it is also their rightful property under the law, having done the labor and paid the tax. Just they can never collect or likely will never try to unless there is an amnesty again.

For anyone who has worked in data processing, an SSN number is a simple identifier. There should be one to identify a given entity. My guess is the fraud in social security is massive.

Just keeps getting better every time you turn around. Hard to even keep pace with all Trump is doing. Haven't been this interested in following the news in years.
