I support Trump's efforts to eliminate fraudulent and wasteful spending, but the president can't unilaterally suspend spending. Power of the purse belongs to congress. Very clear in our constitution. The executive probably has some discretion in certain areas but not wholesale veto power. He's gonna have to recalibrate his approach.

Actually he can, to a significant degree, because Congress has, for better or for worse, delegated away much of its legislative authority (including spending) to the executive branch.

If the United States government actually worked the way it is described in School House Rocks your argument would be more correct...

but it's been a long time since Congress regularly passed appropriations bills enumerating specific federal spending (even less so in conjunction with annual budgets).

This was a great press conference. Trump and Musk together were fantastic. Musk is very good with the press and the minutia of what he is doing and Trump was great at keeping the big picture in the forefront. He comes off very statesmanlike, with the confidence of knowing he is doing what is right and just.

Neither were defensive or evasive and seemed to want transparency in everything DOGE is doing. Great justification for what they are doing.

And Elon's son by himself is worth the watch, especially in the last five minutes or so. He was still and quiet for as long as he could stand it, but towards the close he'd had enough. I think Trump was amused for a while but not so much by the end.

Speaking of sons contrast this with Hunter and all the censorship, graft, and denials (especially from Joe "I've never had any business dealings with my son"). Own it libs, YOU are the party of corruption, nepotism, and bribes to media to carry your dirty water.

Agree. And some of it was. He'll have discretion where it wasn't specifically appropriated and very little where it was. With the across-the-board spending freezes he ordered, he's probably "throwing the baby out with the bath water." The courts will slow that down and sort it out.
