Predicts at least 3 years between trying to pull a permit to first load of lumber delivered! Says swimming pools have to be double hulled and built like an oil tanker! Just one of many crazy regs.

Quote:

So here's what's going to happen. All these people who are deep blue Democrats are now going to have to pull a permit to rebuild, and they're going to get the 28 year old ***** from the Coastal Commission telling them to go **** off and then they're going to vote for Trump or whoever's Trumpian next.

You get what you get libs because you voted for it! /Carolla

Even if you get a permit you won't be able to insure it. A mortgage without insurance will be impossible.

That's not how Marxism works.

The Democrats will continue to vote for that.

The Palisades Democrats will get what they want. All animals are equal. Some are more equal. Palisade Democrats are most equal.

The rules won't apply to them.

How do you misspell the guy's name in your own OP?

It is Carolla. A Corolla is a Toyota sedan.

I have a family member who likely lost everything in the Eaton fire.

Brilliant guy... not sure his politics, but aside from the house in Eaton canyon... at one point he had 2 homes on the beach in Malibu that were investment houses that he used as rentals.

I once ased him the last time he went to the beach... "I don't go to the beach. As a kid, maybe?"

He doesn't have a mortgage. Probably sold $30M in patents by the time he was 35.

Someone "updated" Karen Bass's Wiki page:
Quote:

A member of the Democratic Party, Bass previously served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2011 to 2022 and in the California State Assembly from 2004 to 2010, serving as speaker during her final Assembly term. She is also famous for deserting her post at a crucial time during the fires for a planned holiday to Africa, returning to a burned city.

The only way these folks will learn is to reap the inevitable consequences of what they have sown. Ideology isn't nearly so abstract when you have to live the realities it creates.

What will be interesting to see unfold is how the new zoning laws from 2022 that basically make it impossible to build single family homes impacts rebuilding, since most of the structures that burned were single family homes.

Fires don't knock on your door and ask who you voted for, and I'm guessing the guy in the MAGA hat on FOX who lost everything didn't vote for this. A bunch of these homes and businesses were in the middle of town and not in the middle of 10,000 lbs per acre of dry brush, and you have to feel sorry for folks getting pounded like this. .

Cali should rebuild every other house. The housing is just too crowded together for a fire zone.
Right now they have a maximum density of ~ six units per acre. My house sits on an acre of land, I cannot see how anyone could build six houses on it, unless they built upward.

Sometimes I see these mansions built along and in canyons, surrounded by brush and I just shake my head thinking "Dumbass. It's just a matter of time." Then there's these homes and businesses destroyed in the middle of town that you just don't expect this sort of thing to happen to. How can you plan against this happening again?

It should. Hussein believes those should be in every neighborhood. And for good measure, import third world criminals and let them live there for free.

My house is ~2000 sq ft on 0.2 acre. I have a decent-sized front yard and good separation from my neighbors' homes, but not much of a backyard. I don't have dog or kids, so I don't really miss the backyard. It might be a lifestyle adjustment for some, but it works for me. I don't live in a fire zone either.

Nah, just let some homeless set up camps on the best real estate in Malibu on the beach. I remember in Austin they had homeless setting up tents right off Lady Bird Lake Downtown in what is some of the most expensive real estate in the State of Texas and just living for free while everyone driving by got to look and smell them.

I do feel for the folks that didn't vote for this and are simply caught in the middle. There are still a lot of folks who bought out there decades ago and have a modest home and aren't Democrats per se. They are completely screwed because there is no way a normal person is going to be able to afford the time and money it will take to rebuild much less the insurance. They will just get what they get from insurance and have to sell and move.

Plenty of rich celebs and elitists as well who will have to go live in one of their other homes but they aren't the majority. That said this is going to take many years to fix and it's going to have real consequences in that state. The folks impacted here have money and influence and they make entertainment content.

I can't celebrate anyone losing their home this way but actions have consequences. Hopefully this does cause some people to wake up. California should be paradise, they just have to decide to want to make it back into one like it was when it was a Republican state for decades. Imagine what a Ron DeSantis type could do to that place in a few years. The people have to want it though.

My company built a mid 8 figure house. From what I've heard, there were discussions early on with the owner about whether to even insure it or not. The insurance would have been stupid expensive, and there wasn't a requirement because the owner was taking out the rich equivalent of a personal loan to build it. Point is, a lot of the people who own and build these super expensive houses don't need insurance or a mortgage.

The people that will be mostly affected are the smaller homeowners: the people who have a mid 6 to low seven figures house on a 7 figure postage stamp. Those people DO need mortgages and insurance. They also don't have an army of lawyers and assistants or a personal contractor to navigate the bureaucracy. Rich celebrities and those deep blue, ultra wealthy Democrats won't get fed up with the red tape because they won't see it. They'll be far removed from the delays and costs in one of their other homes living their lives and just getting updates on other people's headaches. It's the middle and upper middle class in some of the neighborhoods that have been burned down that will get shafted and have to deal with this because they don't have a second home and they aren't special enough to be at the front of the line.

I would imagine there is some kind of grandfathering clause that will allow a rebuild of similar square footage for situations like this.
