"Asian" has a different connotation in the UK. For them, Asian basically does mean Pakistan and the ME. India is its own thing as a large former colony. Chinese and Korean would be East Asian.

It's like the difference in biscuits. Here, a biscuit is a baked good with a firm crust and fluffy or crumbly center. There, a biscuit is basically a cracker. Same word, different definition.

Even if it were to be true, it's still misleading for a news organization as it is their job to be precise and clear.
When you can be clear and say "Pakistani" when it is 99%+ from Pakistan, why keep it vague by calling it something else? "Asian" in the US context means a bunch of East Asian countries.

It is pretty clear that they are trying to hide Pakistanis by blaming a larger group. And this is probably why the problem has only expanded because the Brits don't want to face it head on and be honest with themselves.
