Judge Stephen Yekel, a state court judge in Effingham County, Georgia, was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in his courtroom on December 31, 2024.

This tragic event occurred on what was to be his last day in office after he lost his re-election bid earlier in the year. Authorities believe the incident happened overnight, with his body discovered around 10:30 a.m. by a sheriff's deputy.

Yekel had attempted to resign from his position, but his resignation was not accepted by Governor Brian Kemp.

He faced personal and professional challenges including a wrongful termination lawsuit and financial struggles.

An autopsy was scheduled to confirm the cause of death, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was involved in the investigation.

Being sued for wrongful termination, but damages sought pretty low

Supposedly some financial issues due to ex-wife's failed daycare. Ex-wife said Judge was a good dude, and the financial problems were her fault

I think the Judge just had a lot of headwinds, was out of a job, and probably just sort of said that's enough and called it a day

Sad

Any significance to the rejected attempt to resign when his term was already ending with his failure to be reelected? Did the governor just not want to do an interim replacement or was it something else?

That is a good question, and I found that really weird. The intended resignation was to take place on December 30, 48 hours before the new Judge took office. So leaving office on December 30, one day before holiday, and two days before the new judge took over would not necessitate the appointment of an interim judge.

Don't know exactly why the deceased judge picked that date, or exactly why Brian Kemp rejected the resignation

Apparently, the judge was bitter about the election, and losing a runoff in such a low turnout, when he had actually got the most votes in the first round, but not enough to avoid a runoff. Gov. Kemp basically just told him he's not accepting the resignation, that the election results were legitimate, and that he was not going to accept it based on some sort of manufactured problem.

Sounds to me like the deceased judge was making some sort of symbolic point, and Governor Kemp saw it as petty and wasn't having it. Basically said suck it up and finish your term. Just speculation

If George was repeatedly kicked in the head by a donkey, yes.

Sounds like he was streamlining the system and the system didn't like it.

I'd say at age 74 "call it a day" would mean retirement, but I guess he didn't have the financial means to pull it off,

Who is Georgia judge Stephen Yekel? What we know of state court judge who died last day in office

Two of my friends shot themselves. One went out in his backyard and did it, the other used a shotgun in his living room. Can't even imagine what that was like for his grown children to deal with.

Not sure if you've ever seen Three Billboards outside of Ebbing. Solid but depressing movie. Woody Harrelson's character is a police chief with cancer and eventually takes this route. Goes to the stables, uses a bag, and puts a note on it for his wife - "Call the boys (his deputies). Don't take off the bag"

Damn, no, I have never seen that movie. The friend who went out in the back yard had had cancer but did treatments and it went into remission. He had told several of us he would not go through it again. It came back and sure enough, he chose not to go through it again.
