With all the junk the houthis have been slinging into the Red Sea this is not surprising.

Though very unfortunate, it isn't entirely negative in that it means they are now rather alert and erring on the side of firing and a USS Cole moment is less likely.

The image you posted left off the important part

Quote:

According to U.S. Central Command; a Friendly-Fire Incident occurred earlier tonight over the Red Sea, with a U.S. Navy F/A-18F "Super Hornet" from the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75) being Accidentally Shot-Down by the Ticonderoga-Class Guided-Missile Cruiser, USS Gettysburg (CG-64).

Both Pilots were able to Safely Eject over the Water, and have since been Rescued; with one of the Pilots suffering Minor Injuries.

Friendly fire, isn't your friend. Know first hand. Thankful the crew have been recovered safely. I'll be on lookout for the investigation report when it comes out.

Hard to think these things can still happen but also really shows the growing complexity of our ever changing battlespace and the increasing speed at which it moves. Human error still definitely a part of the chain here though for sure somewhere.

Does the gun crew get to paint an F-18 onto their turret?

I know someone who worked extensively on the Aegis system and he's been dead a long, long time.

Time for an upgrade?

We shot several of our f18s down early Iraq war. If I'm not mistaken two of the pilots were captured and rescued with Jessica.

Story goes bad code identifiers. Pilots and patriot operator reading from different code book pages.

Chop this one up to a DEI hire.

Surprised it hasn't happened sooner.
Rules.... Without them, we live with the animals.

This is not 'Nam, this is bowling. There are rules.

So the gun crew's radar mistook our F-18 for one of the Houthi air force's many modern fighter jets?

That would be "chalk" and as much as I hate DEI (having been canned thanks to it) let's wait until we have more information to make that conclusion.

. That's not how it works. Radars simply show an object or in layman's terms a blip giving range and altitude of the object. There are other means to correlate a blip to an aircraft, ship, or submarine. These include IFF transponder (which was most likely off during combat operations) and an Electronic Warfare radar signature from the onboard radar of the F/A-18.

So the EW's saw the radar on the Super Hornet long before the Aegis Radar detected the "blip" of the airframe. It is up to the EW's to call the correlation of radar to platform. That correlation can be friend or foe. Then it is up to the Tactical Action officer to order shootdown if foe and imposing a threat. So someone screwed up and made a bad call.

Is the 2 seater hornet a trainer, or do they have a role in theater?

Yeah, Mode 5 IFF should have been in play and is very much low observable and secure, especially against relatively unsophisticated adversaries in that region.

Navy uses about half and half E's and F's. E's are single seat, F's are two seats. Also EA-18G's which have two

Looks like a Eurofighter. Gripen is single engine.

Oops, after a closer look it's a Rafale
