Not sure about racist. Did he do that with all Asians or just specifically the ones from a country who attacked us and may have had spies or attackers here?

Not condoning it, just not sure if his motives were racism.

If we rounded up Muslims after 911 and locked them up in camps while we were in Afghanistan and Iraq would you consider that racist?

All Muslims or certain ones from the country that attacked us?

The hijackers were from 4 different countries.

With 15 of the 19 being from Saudi Arabia.

And we all know what happened to the country where the vast majority of the Muslim hijackers came from...absolutely nothing.

My parents thought that FDR was one of the greatest presidents, and they lived through the Great Depression, Dust Bowl and WWII. Did any of you?
My grandparents on both sides of my family were in their late 20s in the great depression and WWII and thought FDR was terrible. No, they were not wealthy at all.

Regarding the Japanese American internment, it was fear and racism that drove that. The fact we interned American Citizens and they largely lost everything they owned is horrible. I wasn't done to German Americans because they could blend in. The Japanese could not.

The WPA saved a lot of dirt farmers from losing their farms. I think that is the difference. The WPA was not a nanny state give a way. People worked (hard) for a good salary, and as such FDR made a lot of friends. (my uncles just to name a few).

G.I.s appreciated FDR for winning WWII and in some ways sparing the soldiers (U.S.) who fought it. (my father, his brothers, my mother's brothers and my mother, just to name a few)

Finally the huge government sponsored projects, such as planting hedgerows (in the plains states) and building retention ponds (tanks) which helped prevent future dust bowls.. You can see what is left of these hedgerows if you take a long drive across North Texas, Kansas, OK and NE (although farmers have be destroying them for a few extra acres of land).

FDR "democrats" are not the McGovern democrats of today.

Guys, I'm a concerned moderate. Just kidding, I'm a raging conservative who despises everything about socialism….especially after living in socialist countries….along with Vermont.

However, hindsight is 20/20. We need to put ourselves in FDR's situation at the time.

Some consideration needs to be given to the real threat that a communist revolution may have been fomenting at the time. The sentiments of Steinbeck in the Grapes of Wrath, along with Pershing's firing on the WWI veterans camped in Washington gives some indication of how desperate times were and are an indication of the sentiments of a large portion of the population. Regardless of the long-term damages resulting from FDR's policies…..the short-term effects on the populace quieted the extreme social unrest, restored average citizens' faith in their government, and prevented a much more violent and damaging level of social unrest. FDR's resulting popularity is some indication of how badly the citizens wanted to know their government was trying something to help the large numbers of desperate citizens.

Most communist/socialist revolutions are effected by less than 30% of the population. The New Deal put an end to their real threat in the USA. Was it definitely necessary? Maybe not, but one real alternative possibility would likely have been pretty catastrophic. It's easy for me as a staunch conservative to criticize the long term negatives without fully appreciating what it may have prevented at the time.

My grandmother that was 92 when she died always said fdr was the worst president of her lifetime.
My NewYork grandparents and relatives on Dad's side thought that too, and interestingly enough, it was because saw him as a "communist". Back then it seemed hard to square with the WW II imagery of him, but his policies in the Depression were not much heard about.

For WWII, a lot of smoke says that we knew an attack would be coming in 1941. By not anticipating it, a lot of soldiers were lost at Pearl Harbor. Second, the Japanese internment was unconstitutional and as pointed out, ran long past the threat. Third, ceding so much of Eastern Europe to the russian commies was not necessary and resulted in decades of pain for millions. When my dad was stationed in Germany in the 60's, there were a number of German soldiers he met that were still very angry that they were holding their positions against the Russians so that the Americans would govern after the war, only to find later they were going to become the communist East german puppets of russia.

Seeing as the GOP is "The Party of Lincoln," inquiring minds definitely want to know.

The dems ultimate hero was a vile racist that used an executive order to put tens of thousands of American citizens in concentration camps based on nothing but their race.

Oh yeah, he also doomed our children to global financial calamity with Social Security

How many American German or Italian camps were there?

Any Germans or Italians attack the continental US (Oregon was attacked by the Japs)? Also almost all Japanese-Americans were concentrated in Cali, which was a vulnerable region. Especially if you had potential collaborators of some sort helping by delivering intel that could help the Japs or their fighters.

Messed up that it happened, but not sure if racist.
"Racism" in that it was only people of that race that it happened to because of the bombings that happened? Sure, I guess one could call it racism.

Now, let's not pretend that "racism" was anything near what African American slaves went through in this country for centuries or even after they were freed.

Same word, but very different in many ways that even the blind could see.

...and FDR gave away eastern Europe to Stalin in exchange for Stalin agreeing for the USSR to join the United Nations. FDR stupidly thought that the UN would spread Americanism around the globe. In fact, it was win-win for Stalin because he got eastern Europe satellite states AND he got to infect the west with Marxism through the UN and letting pissant countries dictate to large countries.

There will never again be an American or non-Marxist leader from a western democracy as Secretary General of the UN. Communists like Kofi Annan or Bhoutros Bhoutros-Ghali will pass resolutions condemning the US and imposing international "mandates" on US citizens and to compel the US to accept refugees, gut the second amendment, etc. All of that bull**** is because of FDR's vision of a global government.

Putting possible 5th column spies in well supplied camps does not even register on my list of terrible things FDR did.
