Lost my mom a few months after hip replacement surgery. Luckily died in her sleep. Doc surmised that she passed from a blood clot.

People that break a hip at her age are usually not around much longer. Not sure why this is, medically speaking, but it's definitely a thing.

Maybe a Dr here can speak to this?

Nurse Practitioner here,
People who break their hips are usually old and frail and don't have much longer to live anyway.
But true, sometimes their frailty makes recovery from such a trauma very difficult and they don't do too well.

My grandmother was 96 when she broke her hip. She 101 when she died.

Would you people please stop posting on this thread unless we have definitive news that she's no longer one of the living?!! Everytime I see this thread at the top of the page I get my hopes up just to have them dashed when I open it up and see no real new info.

Used to be that was a death sentence. Too bad it's not still. At least in her case.

Luckily she's one of the most savvy and sophisticated investors of all time. A financial savant. She can afford a level of care 99.9% of the population cannot.

As a therapist and owner of care facilities I've witnessed some changes over the last 30 years. Mostly the improvements in post surgery limitations.

Everything above is a fact and adding to that the surgery used to be longer and more traumatic when comparing comparable operations, as a hip fix can mean many things. Years ago the surgery often meant the elderly patient would be bed bound for weeks, and non weight bearing for 4-6 weeks. That has changed which I believe decreased cases of pneumonia and other ailments from laying supine so long. I'm amazed now how my residents recover and live a few years. 20 years ago it was much more severe. I used to say 3-6 months was the norm.

Even with the improved surgery and post tx treatment it can and does cause a change in their overall baseline recovery. I can think of no one that returns to 100% normal (pre fx).

At her age it will make a difference even under ideal circumstances.

Mom's had both hips replaced in the last 10 years. She's 85 now. I have no clue how she's still alive besides God's grace.

I wish Nancy Pelosi a rapid and successful convalescence back to being ambulatory without a cane, just as if she were an Always Trumper, who broke their hip.

However, I have been and will continue to be, dead set against her politics and policies and I believe she is largely responsible for the terrible things that have happened in our Country over the last 15 - 30 years.

If you don't mind expanding, what started it and what was the rehab like in duration and PT?

How do you know her salvation status? Be all accounts she's an active Catholic. Even more disturbing, why do some seem to delight in thinking she's destined for the pits of hell?

Lots of people are very naive about religion. You may or may not be.

Here is how religion works. If you believe in a religion... you have access to what that religion offers based on what the religion offers... assuming that is the "right" religion.

For example, if Buddha is right and Nirvana is the ultimate... then suffering and rebirth is your plight until the end. You don't get Jesus. You don't get Salvation. If the Big Mo was right about Allah... you get determination at the end based on Allah's Will for you.

She is Catholic. Her Spiritual leaders believe she does not adhere to the faith and does not qualify for the Sacraments of the faith which is to share in God's holy rites.

Jesus specifically says to Repent and sin no more.

If she has Salvation, then throw out the whole Bible for it is unreliable and God isn't that God... everyone has Salvation. She not only doesn't conform to a life led with Jesus... she actively opposes it and smugly promotes a life against the teachings of Jesus and she celebrates her victories against Him.

People don't celebrate and delight in her destination... I think it is the assurances of God's faithfulness, like in James 5:1-6, that supports the worthiness of our faithfulness. For me, it is that assurance worth celebrating.

Osteoarthritis. Minor pain and stiffness that over the years turns into more stiffness, loss of range of motion and more regular discomfort.

I ran a lot including marathons. Probably overtrained and trained incorrectly for years. Many years of backpacking with packs that were too heavy. Lots of physical labor in younger years.

You get to a point where you know it's time. This is exactly what your physician will tell you too.

Relief is immediate after surgery. I was walking 8 miles/day 7 days after surgery. That's not recommended. Infuriated my physician. I learned later that he was bragging about it in the physician lounge!

You begin PT in hospital, then at home and finally at your PT's clinic. Started walking about 1/2 block day one. Added a 1/2 block the next day. I asked my PT how far I could walk. He told me to walk twice a day and add a little each time. He said my body would tell me if I pushed too far. That never happened this resulted in the 8 miles one week later. After that my physician cut me back to 3 miles/day for 2 months.

Other than walking PT consist of a lot of home exercises and stretches. All doable. You feel so much better after the surgery that you're happy to move again.

At 6 months I backpacked the Outer Mountain Loop at Big Bend over a 3 day period. About 27 miles. No issues.

Thanks for the summary. Just now at the point that there is pain at times, but not enough to go the surgery route yet.

What accounts? The media?

Attending Mass for political purposes =/= Catholic.

Or put it another way. If she were to stand trial for being Catholic, she'd be found not guilty

Correlation vs Causation?

Perhaps people who already have as-yet subclinical systemic decline in things like motor control, proprioception, balance, strength, situational awareness, etc, are therefore more likely to fall and break their hip because of the decline. That is, it could just as easily be that the falling and breaking their hip is merely the first significant clinical manifestation of accelerated aging that had been latent until then.

Generally speaking, this is similar to referring to former Presidents as President Reagan, etc. But given your last point and the fact that we're talking about leftist hyenas (great term).....
