Applicants suggested this Court treat the applications as petitions for writs of certiorari; doing so, the petitions are granted. The cases are consolidated, and a total of two hours is allotted for oral argument.

The parties are directed to brief and argue the following question: Whether the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, as applied to petitioners, violates the First Amendment.

The parties are directed to file electronically simultaneous opening briefs, limited to 13,000 words, and a joint appendix on or before 5 p.m. (EST), Friday, December 27, 2024. Reply briefs, limited to 6,000 words, are to be filed electronically on or before 5 p.m. (EST), Friday, January 3, 2025. Any amicus curiae briefs are to be filed electronically on or before 5 p.m. (EST), Friday, December 27, 2024. Booklet format briefs prepared in compliance with Rule 33.1 shall be submitted as soon as possible thereafter.

In related news, we are considering banning TP Link routers which I had not heard of. They are made in China and have gone from 20% market share in 2019 to 65% market share now.

They apparently have frequent and significant security issues. I simply don't understand why anyone would buy anything from China that connects to anything digitally.

They are cheap which is why everyone has bought them. You can almost guarantee those are shipped with spyware.

Crap, my home builder put these ethernet switches on my home network. Can these contain spyware?

I have a TPlink Deco mesh system and love it. I'd be interested to hear from tech/security folks which alternatives are most secure.

Everything connected to the Internet can contain spyware. That said, those are unmanaged switches with limited features and firmware so they aren't likely to be anyone's primary attack vector.

It related news, they own a ton of hollywood, game developers, remote access tools, CC TV systems, alarms, media companies, cell phone production, software companies, and much more....

The list is extremely long, and their history of cheating or espionage is extremely lengthy. I still remember the guy that was arrested for spying at A&M - Zhengdong Cheng.

It is shocking to me that it has taken the US this long to do anything about how bad the CCP has been when they've openly talked about their long term goals in their proclamations.

Link please? I always thought TPLink was a consumer grade brand. Best Buy / Amazon etc.

I believe anything used in the government has to be certified for government use. Cisco, Juniper etc....

Son, come to my desk for a second. Part of the way the ports work is having a mechanical RJ-45 connector and an electrical 1:1 transformer that isolates DC offset voltage from the peer switch or router. Those two things have been combined in something that is called a "mag Jack". US companies have 100% found tiny WI-FI transceiver built into the mag-jacks that sniff all of the data passing through these ports. The jacks are name brand, but counterfeit. They get installed in switches, routers, etc and the manufacturer has no idea they aren't using devices from the legitimate source. It's actually a big concern now with manufacturing companies that the connector and transformer need to be two separate devices now due to the security risk. I can send pics if you want, but it's probably going to be over your head.
