WASHINGTONThe bipartisan House panel probing sexual-misconduct allegations against former Rep. Matt Gaetz declined Wednesday to release its report on President-elect Donald Trump's pick for attorney general, setting the stage for an effort by Democrats to force a vote on the matter.

"There was no agreement by the committee to release the report," said Rep. Michael Guest (R., Miss.), the chairman of the secretive panel, after a two-hour meeting. Other members of the panel left the meeting without talking to reporters.
THIS is the uniparty in action - as a group these congress critters are protecting themselves. They don't want us, they people they serve, to know what goes on behind closed doors.

This should piss you off - regardless who you support.

Excuse my ignorance, but if he's accused of a crime why is an ethics committee investigating and not a police detective?

Why wouldn't the uni-party want to release a report that would harm a MAGA nominee? If anything, it sends a message that what they have on Gaetz is a bunch of nothing.

I'm wondering if they don't want to release it because it has negative information about Gaetz or is it because it exonerates him, and they want to keep a cloud over Gaetz so he doesn't get confirmed? He wasn't exactly the most popular guy in the House.

Damn, 93MarineHorn beat me to it!

Right. This way they can use the veil of secrecy to imply it makes accusations that are not there. Adam Schiff is a master of this. Maybe the FBI can publish photos of folders that they have staged.

Exactly. Air it out and stop the accusations once and for all.

Gaetz should absolutely go Ape **** on anyone who mentions the allegations now. He should demand the report be released, or that the people giving advice and consent should STFU about it.

You can't make unsubstantiated allegations, spend millions investigating the truth, and then hide behind confidentiality of your investigations and still lob allogations.

I was not a big fan of Gaetz before this. But, as of now, I firmly disbelieve anything anyone has to say about him, since the truth won't be out there.
"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms … disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes… . Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.”

The FBI did investigate Gaetz and DOJ did not bring charges. I would bet the Senate will subpoena everything from from that investigation.

The House Ethics Committee would be more along the lines of your employer investigating you for conduct that violates your employee agreement. They cannot bring criminal charges, but they could recommend the House hold a vote to kick you out for violating the House rules.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

Statute of limitations may have expired, witnesses may not want to cooperate, witnesses have their own checkered past and may not be reliable, there's plenty of reasons criminal charges may not be brought.

Most professionals organizations won't stop an ethics investigation just because you resign. I guess Congress is (D)iffe(R)ent.

They had plenty of time to bring charges prior to the SOL. As far as the rest, that means they did not have the evidence.

Case closed.

I am a criminal attorney and understand the nuances of the system.

Innocent until proven guilty. The government's case, unlike fine wine, does not get better with age.

This stuff is old news now and just smear material at this point.

Time to move on to another attack.

The other option I see is they could be waiting for the senate confirmation hearings to drop this ***BOMBSHELL*** report for maximum effect. You can see the "LEAKED REPORT CONDEMS TRUMP NOMINEE" headlines already.

MTG for thw win. You want to ask why I'm not pissed? That's why.

The fact is that there are more dirty, sleazy goings on in Congress that any of us care to admit. Most of it is kept hidden quite well... Until they decide they want to destroy someone. Then, reports filled with allegations and innuendo are trotted out to kneecap chosen individuals, while other actions of preferred power brokers remain hidden from public view.

If it was serious enough to remove Gaetz from the HOR, we would know about it. If it was criminal actions, we would know about it because there would have been an indictment.

So I agree with MTG. You want to shine a light? Shine a bright one that exposes everything. And everyone.

Good MTG. That's what you call firing with both barrels. Basically the same thing Grassly said in the Senate.

If you want to pursue unverified scandalous claims against Gaetz, then let's just open up the records for every elected official in the House and Senate. There is no irrefutable proof.

Watch the Gaetz nomination sail through now.

Or, Gaetz could have been set up. I can easily see a scenario where he was introduced to someone posing as an adult, but in reality was a plant to compromise Gaetz and firmly establish him under someone's thumb.

Or maybe she just lied. To everyone. I know 17 year olds that look 14, and other 17 year olds who look 30. But what was she doing at that type of gathering in the first place?

I'm not saying any of the above took place. I'm saying there are a ton of possibilities beyond the ones you raise that could be mitigating, albeit messy. But then again, I've been around long enough to know there's a hell of a lot of "messy" in Congress.

This is some weak sauce.

I would put more stock in your critique if:

Hillary was in jail for destruction of evidence
Hunter was in jail for statutory rape and illicit drug use
Joe was in jail for selling influence to Ukraine

I say, if the senate want's the American people to judge Gaetz one way or the other, give us the receipts. We are smart enough to think for ourselves. Hence the election results.

If there's no finding of a violation, the finding typically isn't released. For the organization I'm a part of, if there's no finding of a violation, the respondent gets a letter saying so, and all the records are destroyed.

If someone in Congress was doing illegal drugs and having sex with children, and an ethics committee didn't notify the police, I'd want the ethics committee to be arrested as well.

Hillary should be in jail, Hunter's charges are still pending on related crimes, but Biden is likely immune. If there's a finding that Gaetz violated ethics rules, then we should know. If there's no violation, then it gets mothballed.

That isn't the way the swamp works. Congress won't 'release' the report, they'll just get some staffer to leak it to the press (assuming it is damaging).
