It's in the same spirit of "you have a duty to retreat" in your own home if someone invades before you can use deadly force.

We recently told Ukraine they can use the long range missiles to strike inside Russia. Which is an escalation.
So if somebody comes across my property line, into my house, kills a bunch of my family, and I shoot back across the property line into their house... that's an escalation?

Calling it an escalation is just a form of appeasement. And when you appease aggression, you get more aggression. The way to stop aggression is to smack it back in the face hard. Again and again, as long as it takes.
Reference point: Just look at the Israelis and Hamas/Hezbollah/Iran. We can see how that is trending, and the aggressors are running for the exits... those who are lucky enough to still breathe oxygen.
