They all would have been about 45 today.

Jamie Lynn Hand was such a beautiful girl. Life gone at 19.

I just looked it up. They would have been between 42 (Kerlee) and 50 (Breen) today.

As an '04er, it's always been hard for me to think of the Bonfire 12 as "kids". After all, they were older than me at the time. And my upperclassmen who had been active in Bonfire 1999 always seemed prematurely aged.

But yeah, they've been gone longer than they were in this world.

damn

My best friend and an Aggie passed away in 1997 at the age of 28. 27 years later I still think of him as that age of course. They are perpetually young but that passage of time really makes you think about everything they missed. His daughter is now almost 30. Crazy.

Too soon.

The number of current students there this morning was heartening, especially for something that happened before they were born.

The singing the Spirit low and slow was awesome, and the piper walking away into the distance while playing "Amazing Grace" was a tear-jerker.

I'm glad my wife and I made the trip up from Houston, though today has been rough.

Student Bonfire and the Corps of Cadets very strongly encourage their current members to attend every year.

I was headed back with friends that early morning as there was a meteor shower that night. We left Hempstead and I remember driving by stack around 230 or so and getting dropped off at Moore Hall. 15-20 minutes later our pots were making noises in the hall, and it made no sense to me as it was a Wednesday night into a Thursday morning. The pots were loud Thursday nights into Friday as many didn't have class that day or they were later classes. Anyways, I woke up at 6 to shower and I come back and see 3 messages in my answering machine. Bonfire had fallen, and I turned on the A&M station that showed bonfire 24/7. I was in shock, and I broke down headed to the ticket office for work that morning hearing nothing but helicopters.

That morning I was closing in on completing the first decade of my career. I am an early riser. That day I turned on the TV while prepping my lunch before I left for the office. The TV was on KHOU in Houston, and this terrible story is what greeted me. My first thought went to 1994 - when Bonfire fell somewhat but was put back up very quickly, and that is what I thought had happened. But like 9/11 a couple of years later, I soon came to learn that my initial thoughts were way off, and it was much, much worse.
