What is the single best argument for keeping the Dept. of Education?
It has a $240 billion Budget.

Here are its key functions and my commentary:

1. Administration of Financial Aid: Student Loans don't make college more affordable, they simply increase prices. Why can't the private market take care of this need similar to student loans prior to the Dept of Education?
2. Collecting Data: Really??!!??? ...this can be done by Non-profits.
3. Identifying Education Issues: this can be done by Non-profits
4. Preventing Discrimination: c'mon, really?

Abolish it, and get the government out of the student loan business.

Since it's beginning decades ago, everything in public education has gotten worse and the cost of college has increased almost 10 fold. It has proven itself to not just be a failure, but also a hindrance.

They are ingrained in funding education across the country. It's not easy to just stop doing that, states need a runway to take over the funding gap. Perhaps cut funding by 33% each year and shut it down for good after 3 years.

I'm fully in favor of shutting it down, just to be clear. It has failed in its objectives for decades, and US education results have steadily gotten worse over that time period.

I can tell you why it SHOULD be abolished?

You don't keep throwing garbage/fuel into a dumpster fire. You simply put the fire out or let it burn itself out.

Either works in this situation. Eliminate it altogether (put the fire out), or simply de-fund it and let the fire burn itself out.

Exactly . Not under federal purview per the Constitution. It's low hanging fruit.

Likewise , teachers unions need to be reformed at least and obliterated at worst. They have set back real education and indoctrinated for far too long. Note I am not attacking teachers but rather the unions.

School choice should help. Public schools will need to either adapt or become extinct.

I'm a former public school teacher, and have many friends still teaching in public schools.

They literally cannot see they are slaves who love their chains.

A key function not listed is ensuring services for students with physical and mental disabilities. If DOE isn't doing that, the funding, enforcement, support, etc needs to come from somewhere.

Like all governmental agencies, the DOE can be drastically reduced or eliminated, but there are likely functions it provides that are needed in some capacity.

Sure there may be some functions that need to remain but their main function is indoctrination and it needs to be eliminated. What you pointed out could easily be overseen elsewhere and maybe not even federal level. Just say the school districts/schools need to comply with the rules and make sure they are enforced . DOJ is charged with enforcing ADA , perhaps they have been too busy with their Marxist agenda to do their job.

Lets say it's $100 billion so we can backtrack through the years. That means since 2000 we've spent $2.4 trillion on a department that does f*** all and actually makes our children stupider.
