They are ingrained in funding education indoctrination across the country. It's not easy to just stop doing that, states need a runway to take over the funding gap. Perhaps cut funding by 33% each year and shut it down for good after 3 years.

I'm fully in favor of shutting it down, just to be clear. It has failed in its objectives for decades, and US education results have steadily gotten worse over that time period.

Here are its key functions and my commentary:

1. Administration of Financial Aid: Student Loans don't make college more affordable, they simply increase prices. Why can't the private market take care of this need similar to student loans prior to the Dept of Education?
2. Collecting Data: Really??!!??? ...this can be done by Non-profits.
3. Identifying Education Issues: this can be done by Non-profits
4. Preventing Discrimination: c'mon, really?
