The States can decide how to educate their young citizens. Abolish it at the Federal level.

Well, you can't really eliminate the Justice Dept. since it was one of the first four created by the Founding Fathers (State, Justice, Treasury, Defense), but you can gut it and start over. The other departments are fair game.

I've yet to meet any teacher who has anything positive about the department.

Seeing as how each school district does its own thing when it comes to teaching the kids already, I don't see how the Department of education being abolished would change how children are being taught.

since 2000 we've spent $2.4 trillion on a department that does f*** all and actually makes our children stupider.

Thats the office of Attorney General! no Justice Department, wasnt created till 1870 (about) by the executive to encroach on states rights by enforcing civil rights (a worthy goal). Unfortunately as executives change so does its mission! Now it is just an attack dog for the government on its citizens. The founding fathers did not intend that. States reserved that power! Congress has given it more power over the years. It has become an abomination of its intended purpose.

I think we agree more than we disagree on this subject, but lets not act like the department is sacrosanct!

Exactly. Most of the comments demonstrate "tell me you don't know what the Dept of Education does without saying it."

The argument of "states enforce EPA laws" doesn't work, either. EPA promulgates laws passed by Congress that apply to the whole country. The regulatory authority is delegated to the states so the states can enforce regulations within their own framework.

But hey: "this person said this thing should be eliminated, and I follow that person, so yeah! Burn it all down!"
