Pardon my ignorance, but DOGE will not have the power to make department budget cuts will they? Don't they have to run these through Congress? Could take a while.

Congress decides budgets. DOGE can recommend firing people that the President signs off on.

Congress can make a 65 Trillion dollar budget for all we care, doesn't mean we spend it.

I may be wrong, but I don't think they have any sort of power. It's just a commission that will make recommendations. Then passed onto Executive, Legislative...

The people mandated this..... Elon will spend to vote non-compliance out.

Don't be that person. Just vote to close big govt. down for the next two years and then go back to your swampy ways.

I hope 50,000 federal government workers in DC alone are fired in the first few months.

The average house price in DC has gone up almost 400% over the last 20 years. That should tell you all you need to know that we have too many federal workers in DC and their incomes are far too high.

Every other industry goes through cycles of lay offs, but being a government employee is a cushy job that has been invulnerable to spending cuts.

There's a new sheriff in town.

Don't be to hopeful. Regan had this same type of commission and it didn't go very far at all.

I'm going to go out on a limb here, and say that the people in this administration are significantly smarter, more motivated and have the means to get this done than in Reagans era.

Reagan also had a Dem congress. Congress could give them some statutory leeway as well. It will be very hard to vote against that stuff. The money they highlight could also be frozen by Trump and yes there will be lawsuits and so forth but you start freezing government funds to NGOs and they have to rely on donors, they just don't have enough donors or pro bono lawyers to get it done. Even if they win and shake the money loose it will come at an extreme cost. The process is the punishment.

I may have missed the memo but I didn't see a lot of Rs running for Congress calling for massive cuts in spending. Even Trump wasn't until Musk backed him. I am all for cutting the Fed Govt but it won't happen because Congress doesn't have any discipline once programs and people in their district start getting cut.

It will primarily operate as a very, very visible signal for how much money the government actually lights on fire.

This has pretty much been Vivek's m.o. from the onset of his campaign SHUT IT DOWN.

He's gone so far as to say all government employees with odd SSNs are fired on day 1, and this was long before Elon was involved.

Some stuff will have to get congressional approval.

The media should reach out to Al Gore and ask him questions about how this went in 1993 when he was put in charge of the National Partnership for Reinventing Government(NPR).

While not as ambitious they did end up proposing 108 billion in annual government spending cuts and the elimination of 250,000 government jobs. That was back in the day when the fed budget was only 1.5 trillion.

So I'm going to be fascinated if the media praises Trump like they praised Clinton back in the day. Trump should be able to cut about 500 billion and 1.5million government jobs without any issues. That would be about the inflationary equivalent of what Clinton's initiative proposed.

Those were the good old days when we only had 5 trillion in debt.

Clinton sure was a tyrant that hated government employees.

Think about this for a moment. Back in 1903, all levels of government combined, local, state, and federal, were 6.6% of GDP. Only 2% of that was the Feds.

We currently sit at 43%. And the Feds are 25% of that number.

We can't afford this. Our pocket books can't afford this. Our individual freedoms can't afford this.

While there has always been government waste, the wasteful spending now is exponentially higher than it was during the Reagan era so this will be dramatically easier. Plus Elon and Vivek are far more motivated/powerful than anyone Reagan had.

This is the skyline of Rosslyn (Arlington) just across the river from DC. You can't make out the company names but they're Raytheon, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, etc. Just a few miles up the road you have Tyson's Corner, with more HQs.

This is more or less what Crystal City (aka National Landing) will look like after Jeff is done building.

You may have a legit beef with "50,000" federal workers, but driving up the DC housing market prices 400% isn't one of them.

No power per se but they can make recommendations to the president and congress to eliminate positions and programs.

If you simultaneously RIF most of an org's HR and their Budget/Execution teams you don't have to do anything else.

They will be unable to execute Congressionally mandated funds within the FY and the money will be lost, and their hiring times would go through the roof (already very poor in federal government).

These orgs would be in a slow and inexorable death spiral without doing anything else, and both options are 100% within executive purview.

They're effectively consultants who will make recommendations to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). I would think most of their recommendations would be included in the FY27 Presidents Budget. The reality is the FY26 budget which has to be submitted in February 2025 to Congress is too soon to have many large changes.

Presumably individual agencies could make changes without Congressional approval.

There will be lawsuits at minimum about conflict of interest with Elon and his hands in EV, government contracts/space, social media etc.

Specifically if he begins recommending dismantling NASA as a way to give SpaceX an upper hand

There is more than plenty of federal waste. Make the case(s) one at a time with numbers to back
It up. Eat the elephant a bite at a time. Much of it should be a slam dunk just based on there's so much going on that's out of the realm of the Constitution.

I dunno. I'm just saying that would be the way to do it imo. Blindside them and shame them with facts.
