I seldom post on TexAgs and never on the political board. I've always had a serious, non-hateful, question about politics in the US today, so I thought I'd use the post-election fervor and see If I could have a cordial, non-combative, non-threatening, civil and possibly educational discussion. Worst case, I've wasted 15 mins of my life.

I'll preface the discussion by saying there is one fact on which I believe we can all agree. Liberals, Conservatives, Dems, GOP etc. PEOPLE BELIEVE WHAT THEY WANT TO BELIEVE. One of MY beliefs that I think is verifiable is the following: Pew research says 78% of journalists are liberal or left leaning. Pew research found 87% of college professors or academics are liberal or left leaning. Pew research found the 80-90% of Hollywood is liberal. The point of the statistics would be to show or verify my belief that the media, journalism, Hollywood, academia, social media, et al. are overwhelmingly liberal or lean that way. I will call this a FACT.

I know many liberals or Democrats are not happy with the past national election and I can certainly sympathize with your position and my question is not to add salt to the wound, but I need to ask my question. With the overwhelming evidence that conservatives or republicans have the deck completely stacked against them, how can they still garner over of 50% of the vote? Harris spent a billion dollars and doubled Trump's spending, and she still lost? If I were a democrat or liberal, this would terrify me. Not just for the past election cycle but as a political reality. This would be like A&M's football team having to let their opponent start each drive on the A&M's 40 yd line and A&M having to start each drive on their own 25 yd line.

So, I'll ask, and I really would appreciate if Democrats, liberal, progressives, academic et al. would respond. If Republicans can get over 50% of the vote, what would the result be if there was a more balanced, less bias environment without one side putting their finger on the scale?

Thanks for letting me ask. I hope y'all have a blessed day.

Great question, I have pondered the same...good luck on getting serious responses from the left on here.

But you might be too nice and cordial for this board

the reality is democrats have not run on the merit of their ideas and won a fair election in over 60 years,at least. people in power have no problem with the built advantages they have. if the playing field were actually level we wouldn't have had a democrat president since kennedy.

Mainstream Media died. People are the source of info now, not government controlled propaganda outlets.

Go back to Reagan vs. Carter in 1980. The press was liberal - but NOTHING like today. Most media was somewhat balanced. The idea of "spin" hadn't been invented yet and there was more appreciation for "truth".

The situation in the country was similar to the 2024 election. Most people believed the U.S. was going in the wrong direction.

1980 Electoral College
Reagan - 489
Carter - 49

I think this election would be similar. I know some of the state demographics have changes... for example I don't see CA going red even if...

It screams volumes that with 432 views there is not one democrat or liberal that has enough political conviction and intellectual confidence to respond to this post. I'd suggest one of our students cut this out and give it to their political science teacher and ask for a comment.

Theee are two general poles of thought in political science: realism and idealism.
The electorate oscillates between these two based on the experiences of their daily lives (inflation, border invasion).

Most voters knew what they were getting in Trump this time and we're more comfortable with that than with Harris. Harris was a terrible choice and frankly, I don't see a strong candidate on the D side.

Was this a mandate for Trump's policies or his persona or a vote against Harris? I believe it was more a vote for Trump's persona and against Harris than Trumps's policies.

Any answer you get to this question will be useless and invalid. Your question makes a counterfactual argument. What would happen if we did not have a bias media? There is no valid answer to this because we have a bias media. You cannot truly argue against what is true.

Wow, great question.

Not a liberal, but two ideas.

1.) Liberal ideas are not popular to rational people so they have to have an apparatus make them look appealing to drive the herd towards them by starting young and building on (they have to make them non-rational thinkers - demoralize them). This is proven to be very effective.

2.) A large number of people in this country don't pay much attention to news/current events/politics except for around election time, so they are unaware to the constant barrage of bs

Over 50% is not balance. President Trump broke the scale because liberal fingers were on the scale.

MAGA WON, so MAGA will fix the scale.

The gaslighting and censorship have been so obvious that the majority no longer believe the main stream media.

In China, no one watches the news because they know it's state propaganda.
In America, there is still a significant minority of true believers, but it's shrinking.

We all know where this country would be politically if academia, media, and Hollywood were not overwhelmingly regressive liberals.

It's astonishing to hear intelligent people talk about politic topics that is completely opposite of reality.

Your football analogy would be better if Kamala was paying her coach $10M/year and still owed the coach $76M after losing to App State.

Look, there are a lot of single issue voters out there.

This time the crappy economy, a ridiculous amount of illegal aliens and sideshow issues like abortion and trans people playing girls sports were the main topics and people - especially Black Men and Spanish speaking heritage women decided they had enough.

Many of them rejected the lies because the lies got so big that anybody could see right through them.
