I think if Cornyn pisses off Trump with his…typical backstabbing bs then the latter could endorse Paxton to challenge him. I know the endorsement game usually doesn't matter but for Cornyn-"someone" 2026 it could have a pretty big impact.

He really managed to not have a primary challenger in 2020, and 'off year' (non potus) elections are when senators can be beaten. Not a prediction, just my two cents.

He's had primary challenges the last 2 elections but voters stubbornly select the RINO.

Paxton would be a much, much better primary challenger.

There is one really big hole in your idea -- not all states have the governor appoint a replacement. In Texas, instead of the governor appointing a replacement -- we have a special election for a replacement.

I honestly think it could work. It would take some guts and savvy to pull it off, but with the right backing (Musk) Cruz could do it.

Just the threat of it might cause Cornyn not to run again. He's had it easy for so long I seriously doubt he wants to risk losing a difficult, expensive campaign. Especially after seeing how 2024 played out.

Actually the Governor does appoint a replacement and then they have a special election. When Lloyd Bentsen resigned to become Clinton's Treasure Secretary, Ann Richards appointed Bob Krueger as his replacement. Krueger then lost the Special to Kay Bailey Hutchison.

That said I think that plan is flawed, especially because Cruz isn't super popular. My ideal would be Chip Roy but I could live with Paxton, he's just not nearly as impressive.

Zero percent chance Cruz resigns just to primary Cornyn. He's been overly-deferential to him repeatedly, not just on his podcast but in legislative affairs. Cruz started out 'hard and fast' making enemies in the Senate but has shown no propensity to do so unnecessarily the past 5+ years.

Of all the ideas to primary Cornyn I think that is the most fanciful/least likely. Cruz wants/needs as many allies in the Texas GOP as possible.
