You're paying $50k a year for your kids to use AI for everything in college

The only way to fix this is to make homework hand written only, blue book tests, in class hand written essays, and eliminate all electronic work including research papers.

With that said, AI is obliterating the college model. Universities have contracts with these electronic companies like blackboard and others so professors are forced to use them and this is now the end result. AI has completely broken this model and none of it will work at all anymore. Education in 20 years will look extremely different.

Unfortunately, I think this will ultimately dumb down the population because they are learning nothing. This is less than rote memorization, it's just letting AI do all of the work.

Accelerating the population into "Idiocracy"
Among the latter, under pretence of governing they have divided their nations into two classes, wolves and sheep.”

If we cared about education, it would be paper and oral exams.

as in all of history, people that want to learn will learn and people that don't will not. The separation of these two types of people is happening later in life vs historically. It is showing up at work (post college) now vs high school or early college. At least for technical people. For worthless degrees, it may be a non factor if they never work in that field.

this is why i am having serious conversations with my 15 ur old son about starting a business instead of going to a four yr college. do some online school work while getting business rolling. unless your planning on being a doctor or lawyer college is only good for corporate america gigs. as someone who works in corporate america i am highly encouraging my son to be his own boss. take that 300k that is a complete waste these days and by the time you friends are done with college your making six figures in Your business. with no debt.

I think school will shift to teaching critical thinking and problem solving skills. Rote memorization of random information will be pointless moving forward because that information is accessible in seconds via AI.

Colleges stopped taking teaching seriously long ago. They stick profs or TAs that can barely speak english or are only interested in their research in front of a class of 300. This is the logical evolution where students respond in kind by using tech to get thru it as simply and easily as they can. Funny how "quick and easy" methods that may negatively impact the quality of education have not been a concern as long as the schools were the ones benefitting from it.

A. College isnt a complete waste, unless you get a degree in something that doesn't help you advance. You going to hire a CPA who didnt study accounting? How about a lawyer who didnt go to law school? A doctor who skipped medical school? How about a vet to work on your pup, who learned on the farm back home?
B. Even for some careers, which function doesn't really require a degree, simply having that paper opens doors that otherwise would be closed.
C. College is super expensive, but going to most schools isn't going to cost 300k

I look at college like I look at equipment for my business. Say I need a vehicle. I wouldnt buy a ferrari, to haul trailers. It's way too costly and doesnt provide what I need. I could buy a 20k used truck, and make money with it. You want to be a doctor? Go to the best medical school you can. You want to be a teacher?....go to the most cost-effective option you can. It's not like a middle school is going to turn you away from teaching History for going to Angelo State, instead of A&M.

Get the degree you need, to help you advance. If you dont need a degree to advance, dont go to college. It's not for everyone, but it still serves a purpose.

I work at a testing center at a college. All tests are still paper. When I taught public school, everything was hand written. Including papers. Students had to show all work on their math to get full credit.

I was at a fast food place yesterday. The total was $21.66; I only had $20's, so I handed the young lady $40. She entered it into her register, which then SHOWED her how much change to give. She took the bills out of the drawer, and scooped the coins out of the coin dispenser. She COULDN'T EVEN COUNT MY CHANGE as she handed me the fistful....
A 'small' issue, with BIG ramifications.

Most math classes (at least in my experience) let them use calculators for everything. No rote memorization, or having to actually understand what they're doing.

We rarely used calculators in my math classes. Had to do everything old school. They hated it at first, but loved that I had them so that afterwards.

It's always amazing when science fiction books/movies start making sense in the present world.

There is a scene in the Matrix where Agent Smith says to Morphius "Our world... I say Our world because it stopped being Your world the moment we started thinking for you".

Flip side of that is that letting them use a four function calculator let's them get through the basic math every student should know faster and gives them more time to answer the more complex questions you're actually testing.

Imagine paying for an expensive gym and then instead of lifting weights, you get someone else to do it for you.

Will you get stronger? NO.

So now you go to college and get AI to do your homework.

Will you know more about a topic? NO.

There is no substitute for hard work and actually doing things yourself. You cannot say AI is here, I will have AI do it for me. That just means the one paying for the work will not need you anymore. So you have to make yourself useful in some creative way.

Knowing how corporations work, I don't think AI will take over companies. We have had good processes for decades but all tech companies I have worked for are a mess. They tried outsourcing all tech work to India and that became a mess. Most of the work came back and I remember having to fix the crap these overseas guys did.

We were not allowed calcs in high school. Only in college. I remember having to do multiplication of big numbers using log tables.

I don't have super high expectations for entry level jobs, but expecting a worker to know how to count to ten shouldn't be unrealisitc.

I agree with you.

But imagine if you needed to pick up a 400 lb box in a warehouse. Would you go workout for 18 months, to get strong enough to pick it up?...or use the forklift?

I 100% agree that we should teach them the 'why' and the 'how' of technology we're using....and focus heavily on all the ins-and-outs of applying that technology. I'm just not sure we need to teach them how to do what technology does for us.

I think we are in agreement actually.
AI is a tool. Like a screwdriver or a drill. A drill will never create a chair completely by itself. It will need someone to do something. This is at all levels.
So maybe humans won't write low level code but they will do something in the process. That is what we have to train for,

Back in 1995 when I learned about web sites, I wrote my own HTML file and put it on an A&M server. Amazing! But a year later my friend who was more clued in told me about editors and there was no need to write HTML.

In some time AI will go out of fashion and become mundane and non-novel. Something else will come up. How? Invented by intelligent people, not by AI.

Both of our kids are going trade school largely due to cost/benefit, more companies not requiring degrees, DEI, and the fact neither were going to go into a specialized field that won't have major AI disruptions in the near future. Both bright kids that would have gotten into any school in the state. The money we invested for their college is going straight to pay cash for their trade school, paid off cars, and matching their savings each year to save up for investment properties.

We are a little sad they won't be Aggies, but they love the school and root for them all the way. We would have bit the bullet and paid the tuition if they were 100% going into a specialized field that had the potential for high return. They both looked at the opportunities and made mature decisions.

They still have to turn in assignments, take tests and show mastery of the material. Having AI take notes helps and I don't see any issues with that if it works....but that kid would help himself out by paying attention to the lectures (TBH....I fell asleep or zoned out in quite a few lectures).
AgGrad99
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yep. Agree completely.

One thing I haven't been impressed with...students taking tests online, and getting multiple attempts.

I DRILLED into my kid, that college won't be like HS. You wont get multiple attempts, there are less opportunity for grades, so you have to be fully prepared for every test.

Then he gets there, and they get 2-3 attempts, and take them online. I've asked around and this seems pretty commonplace.

That is a dumb/lazy use of technology.
