That is insane.

Only 59.9 percent of the households in the US pay any income tax.

Also yes MemphisAg is correct. When you factor in tax credits only about half of the households in the US pay any income tax at all.

Honestly, even if they did... what would it amount to in total collected? 2-5%? I'd be curious.

I think 40% is less than $75K per household.

My only gripe is that people voting for x y z are deciding how to spend my money and they have no skin in the game.

It's worse than you think.

Quote:

Finally, we come to the top 1%, another 1.5 million returns with earnings in excess of about $682,500. Their share of income taxes paid was 45.8%, not quite double their share of income. Their average tax rate was 25.9%. Among the tippy-top 0.1%, or 154,000 returns with earnings above about $3,775,500 a year, the average tax rate was similar, 25.7%.

The burden of income taxes, in other words, falls almost entirely on the top half of earners and disproportionately on the top 1%. Notice that tax rates rise steadily with income, a basic feature of a progressive code. The average income tax take is 10% or less for the middle class, which jumps to more than 25% for the highest earners.

The bottom 60% gets paid by the government when it's all said and done.

Quote:

the bottom 60% of taxpayers had an average income-tax rate that was effectively negative. The lowest quintile paid minus 27.6%. For the middle quintile it was minus 2.4%.

How in the world do you just not pay taxes?

Had a Special Forces SFC tell me one time that if you don't pay for something, there is something wrong with it. While I do think he was talking about women, you can expand that to everything that is so called your right to have for free. Look at free education, the free medicine etc that now is mediocre because it is so called free of responsibility of input.

The problem with democracy is that eventually people realize they can vote to take others money and give it to themselves.

The longer I live, the more obvious it becomes that switching to a national sales tax would solve so many problems.

When you hear a Democrat state that the rich do not pay their fair share, please call them out for the blatant lie that it is. It's the most egregious, easily disprovable lie in politics and no one ever calls them on it.

Another fun data point.... the top 1% in California pay 50% of the entire state budget there. That's why Gavin and the Dems have proposed unconstitutional state laws like coming after your money even if you don't live there anymore. Because the folks in charge know this fact and know that anytime an actual rich taxpayer leaves it puts them further in the hole.

None of this is remotely sustainable anymore.

Gonna be fun when I start bringing my notepad with me after dinner I'll figure 20% of my tab and then take 30% of the tip back and write a note saying thanks I'll put this towards my taxes since you don't have to.

Irrelevant. Talking about income tax. If you don't pay that, you should not have a voice.

If one does not pay anything, then they should STFU and sit in the corner, strive to improve your lot in life, we should change the tax code so that everyone contributes, and/or we should cut spending so dramatically that an income tax is not necessary.

Fair Tax would fix 100% of this, would fully fund the government and it would fix 90% of ancillary governmental societal cultural problems because 100% of citizens would have skin in the game.

OP, I think it's roughly 50% when the impact of tax credits are included. Half the people in this country with an income don't pay any income taxes on a net basis.

Everyone should pay fed. taxes... even if relatively little.

And instead of fed. taxes being withheld from reg. pay... all should have to write a check / make a payment to the Treasury by April 15th.

So all can get that reality check of how much goes into the abyss that's known as federal debt maintenance.
