I'm new to public education, but can tell you everything I've seen confirms this. It is an abject disaster on multiple levels starting at the earliest grades.

And this is why our kids are going to a private school that we have vetted. It will take serious sacrifices financially with 3 kids, but it is absolutely worth it.

Classical Education is making a huge comeback. The trivium: grammar, logic and rhetoric. Schools are popping up everywhere. Private of course.

Kids are actually learning how to think, reason and articulate. Can't have that /Dems

I talked to a bartender/ waitress yesterday, she has a masters in education but refuses to teach. Which is same story for Mrs old crow and other young women in my family. The discipline problems cannot be disciplined or removed and if you try, state/admin/parents jump down your throat,
What's the point for conscientious and motivated people to teach when they can make as much or more in many other lines of work and no parents to get after you when you try to discipline their "baby"?

Public schools would be way better for society if they were more like boarding schools with strict discipline from a young age.

Even if they don't get discipline at home, they should get it in school.

Removing teachers and admins ability to discipline kids is part of the problem. It let the classroom devolve into chaos.

Totally agree. Public schools (by design) are a reflection of the community they serve. Good and bad.

Over the years, adults in those communities have voiced their opposition to failing students and disciplining students. They voiced that through their elected officials that run the state from Austin. Those elected officials then write the rules (or appoint the rule-makers, or they vote on the legislation that addresses this) that the local public school districts have to follow. applied handcuffs to local administrators and teachers. Can't fail students can't discipline students.

That pendulum is starting to gain some energy to shift the other direction. I hope. But until we apply enough pressure in Austin, things will not change at a local level. There's only so much control that they have allowed local leadership to maintain.
