Fox is making a big deal about the recovery of the shooter's transmitter but doesn't say what it's used for. I tried to look it up but didn't get a clear answer.

What is the significance of a "transmitter"?

Trigger explosives in his vehicle, supposedly.

I am talking out of my ass but in the given context it means it's a place setter on a gps to let someone know your whereabouts without it being a cell phone or something similar.

It would mean he had an accomplice or others helping him or in the know.

A transmitter is used for communication right? With who or what?
No, I don't care what CNN or MSNBC said this time

Set off explosive devices found in his van?

His vehicle was rigged with explosives. I assume this was the method to detonate.

Probably used to receive transmittal from CIA; three blinks to shoot, 6 blinks to detonate.

In one source, they claimed it was to trigger explosives in car and at his home.....
I voted for this because I like Mean Tweets!

I wonder if the car bomb was maybe setup as a distraction for a getaway, had he enough time to trigger it.

Like a cell phone? A GMRS radio? A controller for a drone? A GPS device? An Air tag? Lots of things transmit signals.

That looks like a garage door opener to me.

That's my thought

Shoot the president then activate explosives in your car to distract security as you get away

Looks like a garage door remote or an apartment gate remote.

I wonder if it was to blow anyone up who got near his car, or for him in case he expected to get away and only use it if he was caught.

Looks to be some sort or generic made-in-China transmitter that could be used for home security or hobby projects.

Or to remotely detonate a car bomb for a distraction as the case may be.

Or… he had it in his pocket because he went through a gate or garage door earlier and wasn't really concerned about a getaway plan. You think this dude was that sophisticated of a planner? It looks like he bought his ammo earlier that day…

It was a one way trip. Dude knew he has been spotted. He wasn't deaf. I'm sure he could hear people yelling about him or at him, and activity. He knows at the last minute an officer had spotted him directly. He didn't abort.

I would assume to not accidentally set off a bomb.

I'm no professional but I thought:

A transmitter usually pings your location

A remote/detonator usually sets off explosives

They could just be using the wrong word

I'll bet law enforcement removed the battery after the fact to ensure it couldn't be used for any purpose

That would be an odd thing to do. Most people leave garage door openers in their car. I wouldn't expect an assassin who probably knew he had a good chance of dying was thinking "better grab that garage opener for my trip home".

But like you said, he doesn't seem to be the big planner type. This is yet another detail that pushes the needle more towards having an accomplice.

Most garage door openers don't have a telescoping antenna and a 1000 meter range.

Yep, a 20 year old loser with ZERO online/social media footprint is going to waltz in getting range finder through security, and a ladder and rifle (God knows how) and just assume he'll be able to scale an unmanned building 130 yds from the president with a clear line of sight. One head turn and 1-2 cm away from the nation turning upside down. I am still a little traumatized by how close this all was and how ridiculously easy it was for the shooter.

Even the most deranged, low IQ school shooters wouldn't even consider it a suicide mission, because they would know that there would be almost a 100% chance of being detained and arrested if they even tried to approach that building, much less scale it. Fiction writers would laugh at how stupid this plotline is.

This slackjawed punk either had help, or it was such an insanely stupid amateur plan that it worked out of sheer luck, and thanks to shocking incompetence. And no one can say this insane plan didn't work. President doesn't turn his head at exactly the right time and we may be under martial law right now...with unrest all over the country. Any hope we had in this country whatsoever, all lost.
