Which, if you are trying to help the shooter, that's how you set it up. During a crisis, those lackeys won't know what to do, will hesitate, giving the shooter the shot. Actually, Protonmail will comply with all legal subpoenas and warrants. They're will not hand over account information just become law enforcement asks for it. They got a lot of people annoyed at them for handing over information to Spanish law enforcement, but they did so when a warrant was filed for the information.

Because they're based in Switzerland, it is more complex and time consuming to get into the accounts, but it can be done.

It's a little more complex than that. They have a lot of users now and do hand over payment data and recovery email address when properly requested (on an increasing basis) but that was just an example. And the encryption itself is pretty damn tough to get through; if you forget and reset your password you can't go back and look at stuff before the reset even.

It's a good level of encryption/ease of use/privacy vs. other options which are practically run on NSA (AWS) servers, imho, and just an example. I have no idea if that's the email/'foreign' encryption referenced. There are a multitude of smaller/alternative services he coulda been using. Hypothetically, if Crooks was using ProtonMail, and couldn't get to his emails on his phone, they could get (via Swiss authorities) Proton to send over his email recovery address and payment method, but not sure that would help them out, being my point.

When all this gets sorted out, we may look behind us and see only one set of footprints in the sand.
