Rush - Red Barchetta from RUSH

I heard this tonight the first time in decades and I immediately remember as a kid I always thought the flaw with this song is it will never happen. Now, the Orwellian left is activley enacting these exact laws. Same with Star Trek below, stuff enjoyable to watch because it was fantasy, but now it is becoming reality. Scary. Just curious if anybody else has run into something like this ?

A song about an Orwellian future where the government has outlawed gas powered motor vehicles and the spirit of a kid and his uncle who resist.

My uncle has a country place
That no one knows about
He says it used to be a farm
Before the Motor Law
And on Sundays I elude the eyes
And hop the turbine freight
To far outside the wire
Where my white-haired uncle waits

Jump to the ground
As the Turbo slows to cross the borderline
Run like the wind
As excitement shivers up and down my spine
Down in his barn
My uncle preserved for me an old machine
For fifty-odd years
To keep it as new has been his dearest dream

I strip away the old debris
That hides a shining car
A brilliant red Barchetta
From a better, vanished time
We fire up the willing engine
Responding with a roar
Tires spitting gravel
I commit my weekly crime

Wind in my hair
Shifting and drifting
Mechanical music
Adrenaline surge
Well-weathered leather
Hot metal and oil
The scented country air
Sunlight on chrome
The blur of the landscape
Every nerve aware

Suddenly, ahead of me
Across the mountainside
A gleaming alloy air-car
Shoots towards me, two lanes wide
I spin around with shrieking tires
To run the deadly race
Go screaming through the valley
As another joins the chase

Drive like the wind
Straining the limits of machine and man
Laughing out loud with fear and hope
I've got a desperate plan
At the one-lane bridge
I leave the giants stranded at the riverside
Race back to the farm
To dream with my uncle at the fireside

Just like Star Trke " Patterns of Force " I never thought this would happen and sadly I can both happening in tha few years.

Thanks for the memories. I had that on cassette back in the day. They told stories in songs back then, unlike today where "music" is often just an excuse to cuss and talk about beating up women.
Buy a man eat fish, he day, teach fish man, to a lifetime.

I think that, to be very honest with you, I do believe that we should have rightly believed, but we certainly believe that certain issues are just settled.

Creeping toward dystopia . . .

Orwell . . .

Huxley . . .

Democrats rushing to embrace total control . . .

Of you. Themselves. Everyone. Everything.

All the science fiction is coming true . . .

Rush is awesome, but now they are slowly (maybe not-so-slowly) moving into prophet status.

In France they have enacted regulations that rate your vehicle on a scale of 1-6 that determines where and when you can operate it.

https://www.france.fr/en/article/crit-air-anti-pollution-vehicle-sticker/#what-are-the-regulations-in-force-3

Sadly, I'd bet it's only a matter of time until something similar is done in the U.S.

Still my number 1 favorite song after all these years. Red Barchetta is the first song I've played in every car I've owned. Call it a tradition, or even a superstitious totem to ward off this dystopian vision.

Good post but Neil was more Rand inspired than Orwell at that time.

Self driven EV's that you no longer own. Safety laws will quickly follow.

Amazing to me that the majority of the themes presented in Dr. Kroitor's Sci-Fi Literature class (early 80's for me) as warnings are now being actively forced as policy. And like the previous poster said, the only surprise is that it's happening in my lifetime.

* Dr. Kroitor would have been 100 this past March. RIP

I was in that class!

It was so great!

My biggest problem was that his tests were largely memorization; what happened in each story. I would have preferred more analysis or logical speculation, but oh well.

But he was great and so was reading all that sci-fi!

Before the final, I sat up all night reading "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" because I hadn't read it in time.

Needless to say I did not ace that exam.

Thanks for the throwback memory!

Great times.

It really is. I get why people aren't Rush fans because of musical taste/preferences, but they wrote songs with real insight and meaning that could also be played loud for the more superficial rock enjoyment.

Manhattan Project (development of nuclear weapons)

Limelight (living life as a performer)

Subdivisions (high school social cliques)

The Spirit of Radio (the commercialization of broadcast radio)

many, many more...

"So the Maples formed a Union
And demanded equal rights
"The Oaks are just too greedy.
We will make them give us light."

Now there's no more Oak oppression
For they passed a noble law
And The Trees are all kept equal...
By hatchet, axe, and saw."

I don't think it is a flawed song. As a kid, I thought that it was flawed because the premise of the song would never happen. To be young and naive again.

"Nobody's Hero" remains particularly applicable and poignant today.

Is the voice of reason against the howling mob
Hero!
Is the pride of purpose in the unrewarding job
Hero!
NOT the champion player who plays the perfect game
Hero!
NOT the glamour boy who loves to sell his name

From 1969, "Monster" by Steppenwolf

Quote:

Once the religious, the hunted and weary
Chasing the promise of freedom and hope
Came to this country to build a new vision
Far from the reaches of Kingdom and pope
Like good Christians some would burn the witches
Later some got slaves to gather riches
But still from near and far to seek America
They came by thousands, to court the wild
But she just patiently smiled and bore a child
To be their spirit and guiding light
And once the ties with the crown had been broken
Westward in saddle and wagon it went
And till the railroad linked ocean to ocean
Many the lives which had come to an end
While we bullied, stole and bought a homeland
We began the slaughter of the red man
But still from near and far to seek America
They came by thousands to court the wild
But she just patiently smiled and bore a child
To be their spirit and guiding light
The Blue and Grey they stomped it
They kicked it just like a dog
And when the war was over
They stuffed it just like a hog
And though the past has its share of injustice
Kind was the spirit in many a way
But its protectors and friends have been sleeping
Now it's a monster and will not obey
The spirit was freedom and justice
And its keepers seemed generous and kind
Its leaders were supposed to serve the country
But now they won't pay it no mind
Cause the people grew fat and got lazy
Now their vote is a meaningless joke
They babble about law and order
But it's all just an echo of what they've been told
Yeah, there's a monster on the loose
It's got our heads into the noose
And it just sits there watchin'
The cities have turned into jungles
And corruption is stranglin' the land
The police force is watching the people
And the people just can't understand
We don't know how to mind our own business
'Cause the whole world's got to be just like us
Now we are fighting a war over there
No matter who's the winner we can't pay the cost
'Cause there's a monster on the loose
It's got our heads into the noose
And it just sits there watchin'
America, where are you now
Don't you care about your sons and daughters
Don't you know we need you now
We can't fight alone against the monster
America, where are you now
Don't you care about your sons and daughters
Don't you know we need you now
We can't fight alone against the monster
America...America...America...America...

More Peart pearls:

"Alien Shore" -- another very underrated Rush song from the "Counterparts" album, featuring some of Geddy's and Alex's best guitar work.

For you and me, sex is not a competition
For you and me, race is not a definition
For you and me, we hold these truths to be self evident
For you and me, we'd elect each other president

Rush is awesome. There was a documentary on Netflix a while back. Great stuff. They interviewed Gene Simmons about Rush being on tour with Kiss. He was laughing about there being all of these smoking hot groupies and drugs around and Rush was back in their rooms, reading and working on music.

If you want new, then do it soon. I've had nothing but manuals, and you can't really appreciate the "shifting and drifting, mechanical music, adrenaline surge" until you drive one. And make sure it's a convertible, too.

I just wanted to post a heartfelt "Thank You" for posting this. For a few moments there I was young again and since this is actually my birthday, you should know that this was the best gift I've had so far today. Like the song says "Magic at your fingers". Neil Peart is one of my music heroes that I truly miss and I loved the tribute.

Thank you!

Of course, it's going to be tough to top the gift that's coming later this evening. NCAA Baseball National Championships are the best!

I had manuals for a long time until I got a Tesla Model S back in 2012 or so. Have a 2023 Corvette now and not stick but the double clutch transmission is pretty impressive. I use the paddles when I performance drive for fun.

I plan to keep it as long as I can get in and out of it as with all the EPA rules and safety sensors it may be one of the last great V8s.

Ran across a related youtube about this very tour some time ago. The opening band for that Rush Kiss tour was AC/DC. Here's a clip of the original AC/DC lead singer Bon Scott in an Australian interview the upcoming tour with a "band you might not have heard of - Rush" (the interviewer hadn't heard of them) at the 45 second mark:
