ESPN finally found someone in the WNBA that they can promote to normal people. You cannot sell the WNBA to a non-fan by hyping up a 280 pound tatted hood rat from Rutgers who can barely make a layup. That she is white is not mere coincidence, but the all-time scoring leader angle provided them racial cover. That's why we are hyping her, not because she is white, and straight, and loves America and God. Wink wink.

Regardless, they are overplaying her by a lot, highlighting her every move and calling it revolutionary, other-worldly skill -- like drawing a double-team and then finding an open teammate.

I was a big fan of Sheryl's, and agree she is in the argument for GOAT.

Unfortunate that doesn't make up for her showing a real ugly side toward this young talent who has done Sheryl no wrong, and it sure as hell appears the only thing Caitlin is guilty of is being white.
The GOAT is entitled to her opinion on Clarke is she not?

You don't get to be that accomplished without being incredibly competitive. I think you guys are reaching playing the race card.

If Wayne Gretsky recorded public shamings of anyone with dark skin that dared play his game you'd be cool with that? You would be on here defending them against any criticism? You say a GOAT is entitled to their opion, right?
You Karens are reaching on the race card.

Once you have to start with straw man arguments I can tell the outrage is manufactured. You guys sound like a bunch whiny little girls.

Did Sheryl Swoopes call Clarke a white b***ch like Pat Mcafee?
I'm curious as to where the racism claim is coming?

You may be right. We should probably just chalk this up to petty female jealousy. A bunch of mannish ugly dykes don't like the spotlight on some newby white girl. Their league is pure welfare from the NBA so they could give a crap about increasing viewership.
Newsflash ....women ( of all races and cultures) tend to hate on women that are younger and prettier than they are. This jealousy and envy is encoded in their DNA.

What I need from you guys is some evidence of Swoopes diminishing Clarke because of the color of her skin.
For example:
-Gilbert Arenas is constantly hating on European Players.
-Pat McAfee called Clarke a white b****.
-Montrez Harrell once called Luka Doncic a b**ch ass white boy.

These are all concrete examples of racism.

Well, they are holding her to a ridiculous standard and the uniform hatred for someone who has shown only humility and selflessness leads us to some not so kind conclusions about their true feelings. As stupid as they are, at least they understand they can't state for the record that their hate for her is mostly racial.

The only slightly fair point is that Caitlyn Clark is being attacked because she is somebody. People then attack her based on the most obvious things that make her different: Race, religion & sexual orientation. So they are attacking her because she is Popular and one common thing to attack on is race. So it might come off more racist but really it is just jealousy. Which you could argue is a fundamental element to racism.

Unfortunately, the masses that eat up sports talk have created a chamber of people making ridiculous and outlandish takes. That gets eyeballs. That creates $ revenue.

Stephen A, Collin Cowherd, Shannon Sharpe, Mcafee (never watched), other past their prime great players. It is chasing after that clickbait title /tik tok.

You mean is she popular because she is bringing " diversity " to the WNBA which is sorely needed, while
" enriching " it ??

Would this question be asked of ANY black athlete entering any sport ??

Now do Tiger Woods
Cerena and Venus Williams would also like a word....
Here's the thing about these three, and to a degree Manziel and Tebow as well -

They stood out among their peers in a few ways.

Like it or not, and especially with Tiger and the Williams sisters - they were the proverbial sore thumb in their respective sports. Golf had traditionally been an upper class, rich man, and almost exclusively white man's sport. Then comes along Tiger and he upends the standard demographic. Didn't hurt at all that when he was younger before he stuck his wang in hookers, he played possibly some of the best golf ever and it added to the story. He had a different name, different look and color, and played better than anybody else.

The Williams sisters are much the same. Tennis had long been a sport reserved for the upper class wealthy, who were predominantly white. And in the case of women tennis players, they almost all fit the same build - athletic, thin/lean and not all that muscular. Venus fits the physical mold for the most part, sans the color. Serena is an outlier in the sport, even to this day. She's muscular, almost build like a linebacker. Stronger, far more powerful than most other players. They came from a relatively poor family as well - definitely didn't fit the "rich ivy league" mold that most people were accustomed to with female tennis stars. And they both could play, especially in the case of Serena - she dominated the sport for a good number of years.

With both, nobody similar has replaced them. In golf things have kind of gone back to the more traditional pre-tiger ways, assuming the same with women's tennis as well.

Manziel and Tebow, though not quite as high of a degree, were also outliers int hat they came at a time when there was a major shift in football from the old school Peyton Manning and Aaron Roger type QB's that weren't full blown athletes into an era where QB's had become every bit the playmaker on the field that running backs or receivers had traditionally been. And, almost exclusively, the new breed of QB was comprised of very athletic black guys that could run and throw the ball 80 yards. Cam Newton, Lamar Jackson, etc.

Then here comes Tebow - who was build like a tight end and could run over defensive linemen and linebackers. And Manziel, who did things that even some of the black stud duck athletes shook their heads at in disbelief. They definitely stuck out as outliers in their respective positions at the time they played and for how they played. Helped with Tebow that he played for UF when they were winning championships and for JFF because A&M had just joined the SEC and most pundits and TV aired our games expecting us to get beat down to nothing.

All of them peaked in their careers at the most opportune times, which goes back to the old saying that timing is everything. It's 100% true.

In the case of JFF and Tebow, as others pointed out earlier - part of their popularity stemmed from the fact that it is socially acceptable to do everything possible to tear down a white guy. In Tebow's case because he was openly Christian and a virgin. I remember with him that's about all I heard about for half of his career. Not that he was a hell of a teammate, leader and ballplayer - but that he put John 3:16 eye black on, prayed before and after games, thanked God for his success, etc. and that he wasn't banging chicks left and right becuase he was saving himself for marriage. With JFF, he was a spoiled rich kid that supposedly came from money and every single move he made was scrutinized to the nth degree by everybody - some because they loved him, more because they hated him for what they thought he was. He also played for A&M, which didn't help his media case in any way. But in both cases, nobody got upset at anybody for unfairly critizing the white boys. Hell, when both washed out of the league there were celebratory "I told you so's!" all over the place. Had Lamar Jackson or even Winston had the same level of scrutiny, the term racism would have been thrown around left and right.

Clark:

1) Leading the league in assists as a rookie, by quite a bit, on a not very good team
2) Has a release that is as fast as Stephen Curry's. That is not an exaggeration. And, not like comparable "for a girl". Her release is between 0.40 and 0.45 seconds. Curry's is between 0.40 and 0.45 seconds.
3) Has Stephen Curryesque range. Not the same range as Curry, but comparable league by league.
4) She scores well, rebounds well for a guard. She is a very well rounded player. A testament to this is that she is like 5 or 6 in the league in fantasy points, depending on the fantasy league. While fantasy leagues are not real world, it tells you that she is a contributor in a lot of different ways.
5) She sells out arenas, even visiting arenas.
6) She sells merchandise. WNBA merchandise. People buy it. And apparently, some people wear it. A girls jersey. From the WNBA. People actually pay money for that. That is something.

She is an exciting new rookie. She will likely be MVP and a champion in the near to mid future.

I don't think she is overplayed.

No one cares about the WNBA. Even women don't go to watch these women play. That is the fact but the libs continue to shame men and demand same payment as male players.
You draw crowds like LeBron before you demand a paycheck like him. These women cannot do so, so they start playing victim and try to shame the male players.

You obviously didn't see the crowds at her game. Prices were even increased because of her and they still sold like hotcakes.

I'm not saying any of the WNBA players deserve Lebron level salaries, but if attention and attendance continues to grow next season, it wouldn't be crazy to think they could get a small increase.

The wnba and its partners in media are are doing exactly what the nba did in the early 80's. Highlighting Bird vs Magic in an effort to create some racial tension to drive viewership. They just do it without any subtlety like they did back in the day.

I'll just say it :

1. She's very talented. Speaks for itself.

2. She's white. That adds some fans that like to see their own race in sports, whether it be a white girl on a mostly black sport or a black person in a mostly white sport. It's reality.

3. She's straight. Hey, say what you want but people do tire of a bunch of raging non-straight, possibly trans, people in a sport. That's reality.

When men act like women in sports, it's NOT attractive to the audience as a whole. Why wouldn't the reverse be true when a bunch of women act like a bunch of men in their sport?

4. Attractive (to some) and not full of makeup, fake nails, fake eyelashes. This isn't a racist comment nor meant towards any particular race. But if you want guy fans, this helps. I look at Angel Reese and see a talented basketball clown with a beach-face 24/7. It's what I see. It's highly unappealing to me to watch that.

Everything is relative.
She brought in more crowds than WNBA did earlier.
LeBron/Curry bring in way more crowds thank Clark.

Pay her according to the revenue she brings in. That is fair. Give her a raise if she and the rest bring in more revenues (not crowds). If not, no.

Keep in mind, she has the novelty factor so crowds may be coming in for that. Wait for some more time.
