The April 8th total solar eclipse is getting a lot of attention. An abnormal amount. Some Texas counties are issuing a disaster declaration ahead of the event. Something is off. Having hundreds of thousands arrive in the hill country to see the event doesn't sound worrisome but emergency coordinators are advising folks to stock up on food, fuel and supplies.

We had an eclipse last October. There wasn't any of this. What gives?

What I heard is that they are proactively declaring certain counties disasters so they can request additional police and the state/fed (I assume) will cover the cost of it.

Fredericksburg is supposed to be completely overwhelmed.

This makes sense. I have a client that coordinates off duty police all over the country and you'd be surprised how hard it can be to put on a large scale event in a small, remote area. Off duty police are expensive, more than a lot west Texas county can afford for the coverage they need.

Emergency coordinators can be very chicken little.

Ever been to a ski resort town on Friday night? Grocery stores = empty.

Large deviations from the norm definitely cause supply interruptions. I don't think they're worried about alien invasions or solar flares.

Imagine living in a town of 10,000 people or less, and having 100,000+ people descend on your town overnight, whiping out supplies, creating traffic, etc. they're declaring disaster areas to be proactive to better manage the influx.

Apparently certain counties are expecting +1mil tourists for that event and county officials are anticipating strains on infrastructure.

Further grocers and even restaurants are trying to figure out what this means for that week.

Tbh if this is true, locals should probably batten down the hatches and avoid the flood of non-residents that will disappear at a moments notice

Prep is a precaution. This is the reverse of working during Spring Break (less traffic, less people, etc).

If your normal day includes traveling to a small town in these areas, be prepared. They are saying that when you get to the little, small town in your routine, Spring Break may meet you there (traffic, one gas station out of gas, grocery stores out of some groceries).

Imagine all Houstonians and Dallas residents driving to the main solar path for the day. Not fun.

Due to influx of visitors and expected traffic problems, we are proactively working with medical centers to increase blood supplies over the weekend and through the event. Just to help ensure we dont have delays on delivery in the event of needs.

Many of the emergency management groups we sit in, learned from other areas that have had the high visitor influx and are trying to be ready for large volumes of people. When you have towns that usually have less than 10k there being flooded with 20-30k visitors, it can easily overwhelm their normal services (food, traffic control, healthcare, etc)

As someone who was in the path of the total eclipse in 2017, you have 1000's of people coming to your city. No hotel room available for 60 miles. 2 hour waits for restaurants. Lines at gas stations.

I get it.

I think they are also basing it off the experience in North Dakota or South Dakota during the last full eclipse. They simply weren't prepared for the larges numbers of eclipse tourists.

My family in Fredericksburg said the city govt has told everyone to place barricades / signs in their parking lots prohibiting parking as they expect complete gridlock where people are just hanging out and blocking locals, customers, etc from accomplishing anything due to the sheer number of people.

Sounds like people with Food Trucks and lots of water should be heading to central Texas to make a killing.

Gas Trucks and Generators (for EVs) as well.

Good grief, is the OP really implying that there is something nefarious going on with the eclipse?

It is nothing more than small towns and rural counties preparing to have tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of people flood in on Sunday or Monday and probably a good number hanging around until Tuesday.

Imagine if you're a town of 10,000 people and all of a sudden your population swells to 100,000. Your infrastructure simply cannot handle it so better to prepare in advance. The disaster declarations, as others have stated, is about freeing up extra $$$ to be ready for it.

Now watch, on April 8th, Texas will be completely covered by clouds.

October wasn't a total eclipse. The difference is literally night and day.

Lots of crazy Karens online claiming there will be some sort of Biblical prophesied calamity and using the government warnings on crowds as evidence that something is up.

Waco is already overrun with Magnolites, Baylor kids and staff, and the homeless vagrants that are all over downtown but to mention the normal interested traffic. Add in up to 100K more people coming to watch the sun get blocked and it's a recipe for disaster
Covidians, Communists, CNN, FOX, and all other MSM are enemies of the state and should be treated as such.

We live on 45 between Dallas and Houston and the schools are shutting down for the day (no extra-curricular activities) and working from home. They are forecasting that 45 and all arteries will be a ****show.

Sucks for me because we have a district game the next day and I need to practice.

This is a total solar eclipse, not a partial like in October. The last total solar eclipse anywhere in the mainland US was 2017, and before that was 1979 (barely touched the northeast)! There won't be another one in mainland US until 2044 (in Montana and the Dakotas only).

In Texas, it has been more than a century since we have had a total solar eclipse. The last is technically in 1919, but it was an annular solar eclipse (the moon is in its closest orbital pattern to the sun and doesn't have totality like a total solar eclipse).

In short, it is a very rare occurrence and no one alive has ever seen one in the state of Texas. Im in my early 40s and have only experienced the 2017 even in my lifetime. It is a fascinating event and something that will be memorable to you and your family and help us all put down our devices and get outdoors and experience a very rare event!

question for the resident astrologists

so does this mean only the people within the lines can see majority of the eclipse?

or that the closer you get to the lines, you will see more of it as a percentage?

so does it make sense to go from DC to Bedford Springs PA because it is closer to the event line? or it really doeesn't matter?

pretty sure back in 2017 I went to the Outer Banks in NC to view

that was awesome but a ton of people.

I will say if you are in the path, or visit a city in the path, of the total eclipse, it is one of the most amazing things ever

Seriously, other than becoming a mom, it is probably the best thing I have ever experienced
