Six juveniles in Massachusetts were charged in a racial online bullying incident that involved "heinous" language, threats of "violence toward people of color" and a mock slave auction, the district attorney for Hampden County said.

Students from Southwick, about 104 miles southwest of Boston, allegedly participated in a "hateful, racist online" Snapchat discussion between Feb. 8 and Feb. 9, Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni said in a statement on Facebook.

Gulluni said he became aware of the incident on Feb. 15 and immediately called on the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit to investigate.

On Thursday, at the conclusion of the investigation, the district attorney authorized members of the Detective Unit and the Chief of the Juvenile Court Unit to pursue criminal charges against the juveniles.

All six were charged with threat to commit a crime, the district attorney said. Two of those juveniles were also charged with interference with civil rights, and one of the two was additionally charged with witness interference.

"Hatred and racism have no place in this community. And where this behavior becomes criminal, I will ensure that we act, and act with swift resolve, as we did here, to uncover it and bring it to the light of justice," Gulluni said. "There is no question that the alleged behavior of these six juveniles is vile, cruel, and contemptible."

So how did this actually happen on the internet ? ? ? How do you interfere with civil rights on the internet ? ? How does anyone even take a mock slave auction seriously ? ?

Why are they wasting time with this B.S. instead of prosecuting people that actually rob stores or carjack people ? ? ?

Threats are against the law.

Everything is just dumbassary and should not involve the legal system, but of course thought crimes are now a thing, so as long as the accused is white and the accusers are not.

While the article doesn't say the accused are white, which is actually rather odd, that is what they're implying.

The strategic efforts of politicians to divide us by race has undone all the efforts to unify us.

What did they think would happen? If you keep playing races against each other, of course some are going to harbor feelings of resentment against members of another race. The big gamble is that there will not be a race war. They are betting on the kindness and rationality (on average at the aggregate level) of the people who have the most numbers (whites). That kindness and rationality seems to be breaking as the seeds of division continue to be sowed.

I'm guessing they we're mock auctioning classmates which could be interpreted as a threat. Definitely a cause for police and the legal system's involvement for the next several months or years instead of being disciplined by schools and parents. It's just silly. They're 13 yr olds.

Hatred and racism are not illegal. Why are these juveniles being punished as if they are? I didn't read the article so I am assuming there were ACTUAL illegal threats made which constituted the arrests?

Even so, every day someone posts a link to some black person calling white people roaches or satan or crackers, or even suggesting that all of us should be removed from the earth, but no one seems to care.

Hell no!

The only reason I replied was the "hatred and racism have no place in this community". Candidly, all politicians and most public figures make statements along these lines, but I hear it so often it's difficult not to reply these days, as the incident in question tends to be the exact opposite.

If it's the real deal as it sounds, then off with their heads, so to speak. I don't give a damn who's the proper color, what background they're from, just what they did.

I do very much believe in learning hard lessons, but I'd be very interested in these kids home environment. I'm sure there's some signals there. I want them to get hit hard enough legally and socially (which I'm sure they are), but not hard enough for it to ruin their lives.
