Looks to me that Alaskans have soured on their ranked choice voting system.

A ballot measure to repeal Alaska's ranked choice voting and return to a partisan primary has cleared an initial review.

Lt. Gov. Nancy Dahlstrom, who heads the Alaska Division of Elections, announced Tuesday that sponsors of the anti-ranked choice initiative gathered nearly 37,000 signatures about 10,000 more than necessary. She said the state is still in the process of verifying all the signatures.
Phillip Izon, director of the group sponsoring the repeal, said he doesn't expect they'll have any trouble meeting the threshold.

"We did a lot of work on validation, verification. Spent many months on it. So we feel very confident," he said.

The signatures come from 34 of Alaska's 40 voting districts four more than the law requires.
Alaskans for Better Elections is defending the new voting system and campaigning against repeal. Its director, Juli Lucky, said her group heard of anomalies in the signature-gathering process, so they plan to examine the petitions once they're made public.

"Just kind of auditing the signatures and checking the validity I think that that will be the next step," she said.

A second ballot initiative also cleared the initial signature hurdle. It aims to raise the state minimum wage and provide workers with sick leave. Organizers of that effort collected 34,000 signatures from 36 districts.

If the sponsors met the requirements, both measures will be on the ballot in November.
Some things sound good in theory but do not work well in practice. Alaska's system was very confusing. I have not been a fan of ranked choice voting because the results go off of the rails.

I don't know much about it, but I can tell it's bad because my lib buddies think it's a good idea.

Or maybe the people in Alaska voted that way and the establishment and party-aligned bureaucrats didn't like the results

Passed in 2020 by less than 1/2 of a percent.

Without it, Sarah Palin would be in the House instead of a Democrat and Kelly Tshibaka would have beaten RINO Lisa Murkowski for the Senate seat.

So yeah, the Alaska voters quickly realized they were duped.

Agree.Getting ranked choice voting passed was a power broker move, not truly a voter initiative. And by a power broker move I mean the political family's machines.

RCV: (1) saves money, (2) saves time, (3) reduces inconvenience and (4) reduces the likelihood of electing extremists.

People can differ on whether those are desirable outcomes, I suppose.

From a mathematical perspective, Instant Runoff Voting is a terrible system. For one thing, it's "non-monotonic", which means there are situations where voting a candidate lower on a ballot can change them from a loser to a winner. It also discourages compromise candidates, as a candidate who is everyone's second choice will be eliminated early due to lack of first choice votes.

I do think we should get rid of Plurality ("first past the post") method, since it locks us into a two-party system, but IRV is not the way to go. Condorcet methods (aka "Instant Round-Robin") or the Borda count (each candidate gets 1 point for each candidate ranked below them) are better.

Or just Approval voting, where you just have a checkbox for every candidate and vote for as many as you want.

It doesn't do any of the first three and is the only system by which the minority of the electorate get to overrule the outcome of an election that is desired by the majority..

The Jungle Primary that precedes the RCV completely negates this.

If you want a voting system that consistently delivers results where 2/3 of the voters are unhappy, them ranked choice is probably for you.
